Show Review: The Devil Wear Prada at Starland Ballroom

The day after Halloween the Apollo X tour came through Starland Ballroom and I was super stoked for months prior impatiently waiting for the day. Just a look at the line-up got me throwing the horns up. One of my all-time favorites The Color Morale were the first on the bill and played a short set full of songs off of Know Hope and Hold On Pain Ends. Very high energy and one of the best sets of the night. Sadly they went over the set time and did not get to play their final song. The Word Alive was next up and they are seriously one of the best live bands in the metalcore scene right now. A very balanced set featuring songs from all of their albums. They closed with one of their crowd-favorite songs, Life Cycles, with The Color Morale vocalist Garrett Rapp joining the band on stage. Upon a Burning Body played a decent set. Definitely not one of my favorites and definitely was confused why they were so high on the bill but they had the crowd going.

Finally, The Devil Wears Prada took the stage and the place erupted. The energy coming from vocalist Mike Hranica through the entire set was mind blowing and it was hard to take my eyes off of him. I don’t know how he can do that night in and night out. Truly an incredible performer. The band opened with one of my personal favorites Assistant to the Regional Manager and guitarist Jeremy DePoyster’s clean vocals were goosebump worthy. One of the highlights of their set was the fact that they played their brand new EP, the Space EP, from front to back right in the middle of their set. It was great to hear the EP in its entirety live. Other than the EP, the band played about two songs off of every album including the Zombie EP. They didn’t play anything of off Dead Throne and only one song off of 8:18 but I was cool with them playing stuff from the earlier albums. If you ever have the chance to see The Devil Wears Prada live you need to do it because you will not be disappointed.

I didn’t get to catch Motionless in White’s full set but from what I saw they have come a long way from where they were a few years ago. I saw them earlier in the year at Skate and Surf Fest and I personally interviewed vocalist Chris Motionless and they are definitely a band to watch in the next few years. They spent the summer on tour with Slipknot and Lamb of God and then headlined this stacked lineup so who knows what’s in store for the band after this tour. They put on a great live show and the band has said that this tour is one of their favorite live shows they’ve put together.

Definitely a great tour package and every band killed it.
