Pirates Fall in Straight Sets to Hofstra

Date: September 13, 2017

By: Matthew Mlodzinski

On Tuesday night, Seton Hall Volleyball came up short as the Pride of Hofstra defeated the Pirates three sets to zero.

Abby Thelen added to her already stellar season, leading the Hall in kills with 12. Sharay Barnes was right behind with 11 of her own. Sophia Coffey also played well with 18 assists and 11 digs. However, this was not nearly enough for Seton Hall tonight.

The Pirates started strong in set one, at one point hosting a 12-8 lead. However, Hofstra climbed right back, taking an 18-17 lead. This set went right down to the wire, but the Pride were able to close it out, winning 25-23.

The second set was more of the same, as the Hall started out strong yet again, with a 12-9 advantage. However, Hofstra answered back, taking a 14-13 lead. The Pride never looked back, finishing the second set on a 13-6 run.

The third and final set looked dismal at first for the Pirates, as Hofstra jumped out to a 10-3 lead. However, the Pirates fought hard, scoring 6 of the next 9 points, thanks to key kills from Thelen and Barnes. Unfortunately, the Hall would not be able to chip away at the lead any more, as Hofstra took the final set, 25-20.

Seton Hall volleyball has now dropped two straight games, but still boasts a 6-4 record, good for their best start since 2014, a year in which they went 28-8 and made it to the NCAA Tournament.

The Pirates travel to Richmond, VA for the VCU Invitational, where they will face off against Northwestern, VCU, and Bowling Green, before starting Big East play. The next home game will be on September 29th, as eighth ranked Creighton visits South Orange. All home games can be heard on wsou.net.
