On the first day of fall, the Seton Hall women’s soccer team fell in their Big East opener to the DePaul Blue Devils 3-0.

The Pirates opened the gates early in the first half with a corner kick coming from senior Lauren Garcia within the first 40 seconds of the game. After a shot by senior Lauren Dao, the Pirates didn’t see another shot until 30 minutes later.

DePaul was able to dominate the majority of the game due to an impressive effort from senior Franny Cerny.

“Unfortunately, they [DePaul] have a player by the name of Franny Cerny, who’s incredibly good and special and she showed that against us today,” said Pirates head coach Rick Stainton.

Cerny connected on two goals, one in each half to put the Blue Devils up 2-0. The first game in the 39th minute off a header and the second in the 73rd minute, a ball that cruised past Pirates’ senior goalkeeper Anna MacLean.

DePaul’s third goal came off the foot of senior Madeline Frick in the 83rd minute, just getting past MacLean.

“Anna continues to do her job. She’s expected to get a big save in each game,” said Stainton. “We got exposed in some different areas…our defenders had a lot of pressure.”

MacLean played all 90 minutes, with five shots and 14 shots faced. The defense had a rough time as well facing 15 shots, and eight corner kicks from the Blue Devils.

On the offensive side, the Pirates had a few good looks, but they weren’t able to convert any of their seven shots, with three on goal.

“It’s about how dangerous the actual shot is. We weren’t ultra-dangerous or as dangerous as we could be,” coach Stainton said.

Out of Seton Hall’s seven shots, only three came on goal. After Dao’s shot within the first minute, the Pirates didn’t see another shot until the 42nd and 43rd minutes with shots from junior Eva Gonzales and Garcia.

The Pirates ended the game with eight fouls and six offside calls. Twenty-two Pirates saw action for the Hall with, with five freshmen seeing action.

Seton Hall is now 2-4-4 on the season and will seek their first Big East win since 2016 when they travel to Indianapolis to face the Butler Bulldogs on Thursday, September 27.
