Jackson shines in Seton Hall's win at Xavier, 83-61

Seton Hall came into the Cintas Center in Cincinnati, Ohio, with an 8-4 record coming off a comeback win against Butler. They looked to pick up their second Big East victory against a struggling 1-11 Xavier team.

This game had a slow start scoring wise early, neither team scored until a Desiree Elmore free throw with 7:28 in the first quarter. But the first field goal of the game was an Alexis Lewis three pointer at the 6:34 mark.

The offense for Seton Hall may have had a slow start but the defense played sharp, holding Xavier to no made field goals until 2:03. The floodgates began to open for the offense once the Pirates started knocking down threes, going 4-8 from behind the arc in the quarter.

The Pirates kept their momentum going in the second quarter making two quick threes coming out to a dominant 18-point lead early and never looked back. Seton Hall extended their lead to 21 to end the first half with stout defense and three-point shooting.

 Mya Jackson stepped up, making both of her three-point attempts with eight points in the half, with Alexis Lewis adding on two of their own. Shadeen Samuels also had a solid first half adding on nine points with four rebounds, with a block and two steals. Samuels made her impact known on both ends of the floor, leading the Pirates to end the first half up 46-25.

In the third quarter, the Musketeers began to claw back into the game, knocking down two threes early in the quarter that cut the lead all the way down to 11 at one point. A’riana Gray put in a scoring effort in this second half for Xavier, finishing the game with 22 points. Mya Jackson beat the buzzer with a layup to end the third quarter, and Xavier went into the fourth quarter having cut the lead down to 13.

In the fourth quarter, the Pirates got their foot back on the gas led by Mya Jackson finishing with 25 points in her home state of Ohio. Selena Philoxy made a huge impact on the glass, bringing in 12 rebounds, five of which being offensive rebounds that gave her team plenty of second chance opportunities. The Pirates got out to a 22-point lead at one point with efficient shooting, and they were able to put the game away early in the fourth quarter.

The Seton Hall women’s basketball team ends the decade with an 83-61 win against the Xavier Musketeers, with three players finishing in double digit scoring. The Pirates extend their record to 9-4, and Xavier continues their struggles still not having won since the first game of the season and now sitting at a 1-12 record.

Seton Hall begins the New Year on Jan. 3, with a matchup against Villanova, Liam Plate and Chris Russo will be on the call for the game and coverage can be heard on WSOU 89.5 FM.
