The Seton Hall Pirates softball team (13-10, 4-3 CONF) went into a BIG EAST matchup this weekend against Creighton and left with the series sweep, 3-0.

The Pirates came out in the first game of the series on Friday swinging. The team was led by Kelsey Carr, who had a strong outing at the mound and was spectacular at the plate. Carr had a three-hit game, the second of her career, and she had more RBIs than ERA.

But even with that kind of performance, Olivia Gilbert was the player that broke the game wide open for Seton Hall. Gilbert would hit a grand slam in the seventh inning which sealed the game. The Pirates would win game one with a final score of 7-2.

Saturday saw the Pirates play in a doubleheader against Creighton to decide the series. The second game of the series began with Creighton looking to respond early to Seton Hall’s offensive display in game one.

Creighton loaded the bases with one out in the first and fourth innings, but Seton Hall would work their way out of a jam on both occasions and keep Creighton shut out of the game.

The Pirates then showed a strong offense of their own, taking the lead with a two-run third inning. The Hall continued to add to the lead including a four-run fifth inning.

Seton Hall’s scoring came behind a 3-hit night from Alexander and Smith who each also contributed two RBIs. They did this while maintaining a strong defensive showing from the field on their way to an 8-2 win to secure the series in a dominant two games.

The third game was more of the same for the Pirates. While at first, a quiet game the Pirates’ bats woke up for a five-run inning in the third.

But the defense on Saturday was just as dominant for the Pirates as the offense was. Babik got the start in the circle for game three of the series and retired 10 straight batters from the second inning to the fifth inning.

Creighton attempted to mount a late rally, scoring two runs in the fifth and then threatening to tie the game in the seventh. But clutch defense once again put a stop to the Blue Jays’ plans for the day. Seton Hall went on to sweep the series.

The Pirates are on the road once again for their next game, where they take on Monmouth in a double header on Tuesday.
