It was simply a statement victory.

On Friday night, the Seton Hall women’s basketball team (2-0) accomplished this feat against their storied New Jersey rival, Rutgers (1-1), as the Pirates took down the Scarlet Knights, 75-57, in a hostile Jersey Mike’s Arena.

The matchup was filled with storylines all around, and for Seton Hall, they were led by the sensational duo of Sidney Cooks and Lauren Park-Lane.

Cooks was virtually unstoppable, as she posted a 29-point, 11-rebound double-double and three steals (game-high). Whether it was in the post or from behind the arc, her presence was felt everywhere on the floor on both sides of the ball.

Park-Lane, who reached the 500-assist mark in a Seton Hall uniform, ended with 18 points (four three-pointers made in the second quarter) and eight assists. She’s the leader of the offense for a reason and is still proving every game why she’s among the elite point guards in the entire nation.

Other contributions came from some of Seton Hall’s newest stars, with Sha’Lynn Hagans tallying 12 points and three assists, and Shailyn Pinkney scoring 10 points and eight rebounds. They also chipped in a combined four threes made by game’s end.

Lastly, Mya Bembry, who only made one basket for two points, collected a monster 13 rebounds and two blocks. She had four offensive boards, and she seemed to be always creating second and third chances for the Pirates on that end of the court.

On the Rutgers side, four Scarlet Knights reached double-digit scoring, which included two impressive double-double performances. Kassondra Brown scored a team-best 13 points and collected six rebounds, Awa Sidibe contributed 11 points and 10 rebounds, and Erica Lafayette tacked on 11 points and seven boards.

Chyna Cornwell secured Rutgers’ other double-double, with a 10-point, 10-rebound evening. The team mostly struggled on the offense end, as they shot 31.3% from the floor and only converted 2/15 chances from behind the arc.

On the flip side, the Pirates started off slow in the first quarter, but after a massive 18-2 run in the second frame, they ran away with the game. As a team, they shot 41.8% from the field and knocked down 11/30 from three.

Next up for the Pirates is a home showdown with the Ivy League champs Princeton this Monday at 7 p.m. 89.5 FM WSOU will have all the coverage you need, as the Pirates look to win their third straight contest to open the 2022-23 campaign.

Jackson Shank and Mike Federico will have the call from the historic Walsh Gymnasium.
