The Seton Hall women’s softball team (7-7) played in the Libby Matson Tournament out west in California this past weekend. While the Pirates did finish the weekend with two wins and three hard-fought battles, they still managed to keep their overall record in good standings.

The Pirates would start their weekend off strong with a win over Nevada, with the final score being 12-7. Sydney Babik would give up a first inning home run, but this would not be enough to break the Pirates spirit. The Pirates only had one way to go, and that was up.

While scoring in every inning but the first and last, this would help the Pirates in getting this win. Their offense would be led by Ashley Colonnetta going 3/4 during the game, along with the overall team effort of getting runners scoring position.

The Pirates defense would be led by Babik, as she only allowed six hits. Seton Hall would end the game allowing 13 hits, this first game would prove to be a great start to the weekend.

The Pirates would then fall short to Pacific with a heart-breaking loss. and the final score was 5-2. Pacific would start off the game with scoring in almost every inning, while keeping the Pirates scoreless till the sixth inning, when they would make their attempt to try and come back to get the win.

While the Pirates did have zero errors, this would unfortunately not be enough to stop Pacific from taking the victory.

The following day, Seton Hall would face Nevada again in hopes of adding another win. The Pirates would face Nevada’s pitcher Ellie Garcia and would not be able to find ways to get on base. Although their offense was not working, their defense would keep them in it until the fourth inning, where Nevada’s offense woke up and scored three. The Pirates would put up an early run in their final at-bats of the game, but this would not be enough to steal a win.

Later that day, Seton Hall lost 8-0 to Idaho State, but after this, the last game of the tournament was certainly memorable.

In the final game, the Pirates were out for revenge when playing Pacific again, after they lost just a little while before. Pacific would start the game off strong by putting up two runs in the first inning.

However, their lead would not be enough to hold back the Pirates’ offense, as Baylee Allender would secure an RBI, bringing in Miranda Arruda. Jenna Belvins would replicate the same hit, which resulted in an RBI bringing in Taylor Hill.

The score was tied at 2-2 because of the Pirates’ outstanding defense. Entering the third inning, the Pirates would get caught in a double play, but Hill would earn an RBI bringing in Lauren Caye to give the team a 3-2 lead.

The Pirates would give up an error leading Pacific to tie the game at three. Finally, it would be Caye who would hit a single up the middle, earning an RBI and scoring Janae Barracato to give Seton Hall the win they needed over Pacific. The final score was 4-3 in favor of the Pirates.

Next up for Seton Hall is their first Big East series of the season at home vs. Providence next weekend. Michael Federico and Michael Stamm will have the call on Friday, Ryan Henry and Jimmy Bliss will commentate Saturday, and Justin Nicosia and Joe Walls will be on the air on Sunday.
