The Seton Hall women’s softball team (8-9, 1-2 conference) started their Big East play this weekend with three games against the Providence Friars (12-6, 2-1 conference). The games were rescheduled due to weather conditions from three separate day games on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, to one game on Thursday March 10 and a doubleheader on Friday, March 11.

The Pirates came out of the weekend with one win and two losses.

Starting on Thursday, Seton Hall got off to a great start of the weekend with an 8-0 win over the Friars. The game started quiet with no hits from either team in the first two innings, but Seton Hall came alive in the third, scoring three runs followed by scoring four runs in the fourth.

Junior Shelby Smith was outstanding on the mound for the Pirates, but also in the batter’s box as well. Smith threw a complete game shutout and drove in a three-run homerun in the fourth inning while also having three hits and four RBIs in the game.

Smith had help from her defense as she only threw 59 pitches in six innings, averaging just under 10 pitches-per-inning. Smith had four strikeouts and no walks and only giving up three hits in the game.

Freshman Taylor Hill also had a good performance with three hits and two RBIs, including the game-ending RBI that let the Pirates win on the mercy rule, which is being up eight runs or more after five innings. Junior Abby Wingo, who has had a good start to her season with a batting average of .389, extended her hitting streak to 10 games as she secured two hits and two RBIs.

Moving to the doubleheader on Friday, the Pirates lost the first game, 3-1. Seton Hall took an early lead in the first inning thanks to Wingo, who hit an RBI-double that extended her hitting streak to 11 games. Sophomore Sydney Babik was on the mound for the Pirates for all seven innings.

In the second game of the doubleheader, it was another close loss for Seton Hall. This game was a defensive battle, but the Pirates could never get that break they were looking for. The Providence pitching was outstanding, only holding Seton Hall to two hits all game, and there was a total of seven strikeouts between the two pitchers.

Seton Hall had a great start to their weekend but could have used some more offensive power in the tight games in the doubleheader. The Pirates are back in action with more Big East play in a three-game weekend series at home against Creighton starting Friday, March 18.
