The Seton Hall softball team took both games of a road doubleheader against the Manhattan Jaspers Saturday afternoon to improve to 14-13 on the season.

Sophomore Sydney Babik took the mound and hurled a complete game shutout in the Pirates’ 1-0 victory in Game 1 of the doubleheader. In her seven innings of work, she struck out nine batters and allowing just four hits. She never allowed more than one runner to reach base in any given inning.

The Pirates scored the only run of the game in the top of the fourth inning. After junior Shelby Smith singled to lead off the inning, junior Miranda Arruda pinch ran, advanced to third on a ground ball and stolen base, and later scored on a Baylee Allender sacrifice fly to right field.

Senior Jesse Rising took the loss in Game 1 for the Jaspers, allowing one on five hits while striking out three batters and walking a pair in her seven innings of work.

Game 2 saw a much higher scoring output from both teams, with the Pirates winning by a final score of 5-2. Freshman Lauren Caye started off the game with a leadoff walk and later scored on an RBI single from freshman Taylor Hill. Hill scored on the very next better after freshman Jenna Blevins reached on a throwing error by Jaspers shortstop Lauren Rende.

The Pirates extended their 2-0 lead in the third inning off of a 2-run home run from Hill and a two-out single from senior Marisa Pla, which scored Blevins, making it a 5-0 game.

Manhattan scored their first runs of the doubleheader in the bottom of the sixth inning with Rende scored after Hill let a throw on a stolen base attempt get by her.

The Jaspers inched closer after sophomore Megan Hedlund singled home Rising. However, senior Cadyn Ehrenberg was able to retire the next two batters and keep the Pirates lead at 5-2 heading into the final inning.

Neither team would push a run across in the seventh inning, although the Jaspers were able to get the tying run in junior Marika Deemer to the plate with two outs, before she grounded out to Ehrenberg to end the game.

Ehrenberg improved to 2-1 on the season. She picked up the win after throwing seven innings, allowing two runs (one of which was earned), four hits, and four walks, while striking out one batter.

For Manhattan, freshman Ava Metzger fell to 2-7 on the season after allowing five runs (four earned) in three innings of work. She also walked two batters and struck out four. Deemer through four hitless innings in relief, walking three batters and striking out two in the process.

With the sweep, Manhattan falls to 5-15 on the season and will host Siena for a doubleheader on Monday in their first games of MAAC action.

The Pirates will travel to Long Island Wednesday for a doubleheader against Stony Brook before returning home for a three-game weekend series against DePaul, where they look to improve to a 4-5 start in Big East play.
