Seton Hall University’s Baseball team did not have an ideal start to the season winning only one out of the first five games. The pirates needed to turn the season around with a strong outing against Albany and although it wasn’t totally perfect, they doubled the number in the win column in just one day.
It was rather chilly for Saturday afternoon’s doubleheader and Seton Hall split the two games losing the first one but winning the second. The final of the first game was 4-3 in favor of the Great Danes.
In Albany’s season opener, starting pitcher Ray Webber threw a gem holding Seton Hall to only one run through six innings in addition to notching a win. It was relief pitching that made the difference in the game as Albany scored three of their four runs off Pirate relievers. Right fielder Marc Wangensteen helped guide Albany to a win going one for three with two walks and an RBI.
Left fielder John Daly was a big part in the Great Danes victory as well. He didn’t register a hit in the contest but got on base by getting hit by a pitch getting walked. He accounted for two of the four runs scored. It wasn’t all bad for Seton Hall though as center fielder Tyler “Shed” Shedler-McAvoy went two for three on the day with one walk and one run scored. The Pirates had two opportunities, in both the seventh and ninth inning, with bases loaded, but were unable to capitalize on either, stranding three runners each time.

The second game which started at 5:00 p.m. was a totally different ball game. As the sun set over Owen T. Carrol Field, the Pirates went from scallywags to captains as they won the game by a score of 12-0. Reminiscent of Webber’s performance in the first game, Seton Hall pitcher Nick Payero had an excellent outing throwing a one-hitter through five innings and did not giving up a single run. Relievers were not a problem for Seton Hall in the second game as Albany didn’t get another hit for the entirety of the game. He was able to garner a win improving his record to 1-1 on the season. Leadoff batter and right fielder Jerry Huntzinger had an absolute day for the Hall going four for six scoring three runs and recording just as many RBI’s.
Surprisingly, only seven of the 12 runs scored by Seton Hall were logged as earned for Albany pitchers. This game has the potential to be a momentum builder for Seton Hall due to the combination of solid pitching and offensive explosion. Their next venture will be a four-game series against cross town rival NJIT. If Seton Hall wants to turn the season around, taking at least three out of the four games in the series is a must for the team. First pitch is at home on March 12 at 3:00 p.m.
