It was the Abby Wingo show for the Seton Hall softball team as they split their Wednesday afternoon doubleheader against the Monmouth Hawks.

The first game of the afternoon, which had opening pitch occur at 1 p.m., was an ugly one for the Hall. The Pirates quickly fell into a 1-0 hole in the top of the first inning, thanks to a single to left field from Emily Spencer. Taylor Hill tied the game in the bottom of the first with a fielder’s choice.

But it was all downhill for Seton Hall after that. Over the next six innings, Monmouth tacked on eight more runs, while shutting out the Pirates. The Hawks won game one 9-1, as Francesca Torraca accumulated three RBIs on two hits in five plate appearances.

Seton Hall roared out of the gates in game two. A double to left center field from Wingo started the scoring, bringing Lauren Caye home safely. At the next at bat, Shelby Smith knocked a pitch out of the start, gifting the Hall a 3-0 lead. A lead they would not give up for the remainder of the game.

Monmouth chipped away at the lead in the top of the second on a throwing error, but Miranda Arruda restored Seton Hall’s three-run lead in the bottom of the second inning on a Monmouth throwing error.

The Hawks found themselves down by just one run in the top of the third, but that margin did not last for long. A two-run bottom of the third once again gave the Hall a three-run lead, this time at 6-3. After a few back and forth runs, Seton Hall reigned victorious 8-6.

Wingo and Smith combined for five hits, six RBIs and three runs in the second half of the doubleheader. These are among the best players on this Pirates team and should lead Seton Hall to a good season.

After Wednesday’s action, the Hall sits at .500 on the season at 11-11. The Pirates will have a travel day on Thursday, before a three-game weekend series with the Butler Bulldogs starting on Friday.
