The No. 6 seeded Seton Hall men’s basketball team saw their Big East Tournament run come to an end Thursday night.

After taking down Georgetown the night before, the Pirates fell to No. 3 UConn, 62-52, and the Huskies will now face No. 2 seed Villanova in the semifinals.

This game was ugly from start to finish, as the Pirates offense was stagnant for much of the night. Seton Hall shot 35.7% from the field, and although UConn shot pretty similarly at 36.1%, the Huskies shot 12/14 from the free throw line, compared to the Pirates’ 5/9 from the line.

Myles Cale and Kadary Richmond had the best nights for Seton Hall in terms of offensive production, as the fifth-year veteran scored 17 points on 3/3 shooting from three, along with six rebounds and two steals.

Cale has always loved playing in the bright lights of Madison Square Garden, and if it wasn’t for his play, the score differential could have been much worse.

Richmond, who was as tough as can be dealing with an injured thumb, ended with 14 points, two rebounds, three steals, and two turnovers.

Coach Kevin Willard constantly shuffled the sophomore in and out of the game to give him rest, and Richmond was another reason why the Pirates kept it within 16 throughout.

Jamir Harris also scored six points on 2/5 shooting from beyond the arc, but some of the issues came from Seton Hall’s frontcourt, as Tray Jackson and Tyrese Samuel combined for no points on 0/5 shooting and only five rebounds.

Obiagu only had two points but contributed five blocks, Alexis Yetna tallied six points and six boards, and Jared Rhoden only scored seven points on 2/13 shooting from the floor.

The senior also collected six rebounds, but he had an off-shooting night against a very talented and physical UConn team who played in front of fans for the first time in a Big East Tournament game at MSG since 2012.

UConn will be a dangerous team during the rest of the conference tournament and March Madness, and tonight saw multiple guards and forwards step up in the victory, specifically on defense.

R.J. Cole was virtually unstoppable, as he led the Huskies with 17 points and five rebounds, Tyrese Martin also had 17 points and eight rebounds, and Isaiah Whaley finished with 10 points, seven rebounds, and four blocks.

Despite lower scoring numbers, Adama Sanogo and Andre Jackson still made their impact in the win, as Sanogo only scored six points on 2/11 shooting from the field, but still had 11 rebounds and a block. Jackson was a menace on defense, as he tacked on six points, six rebounds, two steals, and one block.

The Pirates only had one lead during the game, which was the first basket of the game, an impressive spinning Richmond layup, but then it was all Huskies until the final buzzer. UConn’s defense was a catalyst all night long, as they held Seton Hall to their lowest point total of the year.

Next up for the Pirates: Selection Sunday. Seton Hall will now wait and see where they will be heading in the NCAA Tournament on Sunday, and as always, 89.5 FM WSOU will have all the coverage you need for the remainder of postseason action.
