The Seton Hall women’s basketball team (8-8, 3-5 conference) dropped a tough matchup against the UConn Huskies (10-4, 5-0 conference) Friday night, losing 71-38.

UConn got out to a hot start, taking a 21-11 lead after the first quarter. The Pirates’ contributions were spread out in that first period, with two points each from Park-Lane and Curtessia Dean, three from Andra Espinoza-Hunter, and four from Sidney Cooks. The Pirates shot just 4/14 from the field in that first quarter.

For UConn, they were led by Dorka Juhasz in the first frame, who had seven of the 21 points on 5/7 shooting.

The Huskies pulled away a bit more in the second quarter and went into the halftime break leading, 37-21. They outshot the Pirates from the field in the first half, 41.7% to 28.6%, but interestingly, both teams shot just 11.1% from deep in the first half of play.

Park-Lane wasn’t quite able to replicate her last performances to start off, going 0/8 from the field in the first half, with her only points coming from the free-throw line. UConn did a marvelous job of keying in on perhaps the best scorer on the Pirates’ roster and shutting her down.

UConn came out of the halftime break blazing and really pulled away in the third quarter. They held the Pirates to just eight points in the third quarter, outscoring them, 19-8. Olivia Nelson-Ododa matched the Pirates herself with eight points in the third frame.

The fourth quarter was more of the same, as UConn outscored the Pirates 15-9 on their way to the victory.

UConn came into this one missing Paige Bueckers, Azzi Fudd, and Christyn Williams, but barely seemed to miss a step without the dynamic trio. Stepping up in their place were a number of Huskies, namely Nelson-Ododa, who had 17 points and 14 rebounds. The Huskies also had three other players score in double figures, Juhasz with 12, Evina Westbrook with 13, and Nika Muhl with 11.

For the Pirates, only one player reached double figures, that being Cooks with 10. It was a near repeat of the Jan. 14 showing against Creighton, as Park-Lane and Espinoza-Hunter were shut down, going a combined 2/19 from the field for a combined 11 points.

The Pirates were also dominated on the glass in this one, getting out-rebounded 53-25, and 17-2 on the offensive glass.

The offensive woes were in full effect for the Pirates, as the 38 points they scored now is the lowest single-game mark for them all season thus far. The Pirates only shot 26% from the field, compared to UConn’s 41%. However, they actually wound up out-performing UConn from three-point land, shooting 21% to the Huskies’ 20%.

The Pirates will be back in action this coming Wednesday at Marquette. Be sure to tune into 89.5 FM WSOU for coverage of that matchup.
