The Seton Hall baseball team started their weekend series versus the Mercer Bears with a battle on the mound that ended in a 1-0 loss.

Seton Hall’s pitching staff had a good showing with starting pitcher Hunter Waldis, the graduate student from Naples, FL., going seven innings while only giving up two hits, one earned run and five strikeouts. Waldis also gave up four walks, which helped in Mercer’s run where they loaded the bases without any hits and scored off a sacrifice fly.

Waldis struck out the next two batters to prevent more damage. Relief pitcher Christopher Shine, the junior from South Plainfield, N.J., pitched the final two innings giving up zero hits and getting two strikeouts and 0 walks. The Bears’ pitching staff was stellar, getting the shutout along with 11 strikeouts, holding Seton Hall to only three hits.

The Pirates continue the series against Mercer with a doubleheader at home on Saturday.

Coming off of a four-game win streak, the Seton Hall baseball team came up short in both games of the doubleheader against the Mercer Bears on Saturday.

The Pirates combined for a total of three runs in two games and gave up 21 in both contests. The first game began with Joe Cinnella starting on the hill for Seton Hall. He pitched three innings only giving up three hits and two earned runs. Michael Ciminello relieved Cinnella of his pitching duties and gave up four runs in the three innings he pitched.

Meanwhile, Seton Hall wasn’t having the best day at the plate. The Pirates’ only run of the game came in the bottom of the fourth inning, when Staus Pokrovsky crossed home plate thanks to a pass ball.

Collin Sheehan had a nice day batting 3/4 with a double, but it wasn’t nearly enough to power Seton Hall to a win. After three hours and 25 minutes the final score ended up being 7-1 in the first game of the doubleheader.

The second game wasn’t much better for the Pirates. After seven innings of play, the score was 4-1 in favor of the Bears. After a Bill Knight double to left field and a Collin Price groundout, Mercer exploded offensively, scoring seven runs in the eighth.

Seton Hall needed two pitching changes to get through the inning. Knight, the player that led off the inning, slapped a single into left field in the same inning he already had a double in. The deficit was much too large for the Hall to come back from, and they ended up losing, 14-2.

The Pirates will play their next game at home against the 2-18 Princeton Tigers. The Hall will be able to shake off the losses endured in the Mercer series and hopefully snag a victory in a few days.
