Creighton Athletics

This game was a classic tale of two halves. In the first half, the Pirates were in complete control, leading 40-32, but Creighton never gave up. They had a dominant third quarter, outscoring the Pirates 23-13, and the Pirates were not able to recover, losing by a score of 83-76.

The biggest story of this game was Creighton’s three-point shooting, hitting 12 of their 24 shot attempts from deep, and going seven of 10 from behind the arc in the second half. Leading the charge for the Bluejays was Temi Carda. The Second Team All-Big East selection started the first half off slow, only scoring six points on two of eight shooting. She erupted in the second half, scoring 23 points in the second half to end the night with a career-high 29 points. She also added four rebounds in 40 minutes of playing time.

The Bluejays also got huge performances from freshmen Morgan Maly and Emma Ronsiek. Maly had a double-double off the bench with 18 points and 11 rebounds on 50% shooting from the field and behind the arc. Ronsiek, the Big East All Freshman selection, also had a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds to go along with five assists. The Bluejays also dominated the boards in tonight’s contest, outrebounding the Pirates 41-26, including 10 offensive rebounds which led to nine second chance points.

For the Pirates, the big three of Desiree Elmore, Andra Espinoza-Hunter and Lauren Park-Lane were all excellent, but they weren’t enough as the rest of the Pirates combined for 16 points.

Elmore was dominant on both ends of the floor. She scored 22 points on 10 of 16 and added six rebounds, six assists, and two blocks. She was the catalyst for the Pirate’s hot first half, but her performance wasn’t enough to secure the win.

Espinoza-Hunter dealt with early foul trouble in the first quarter, but still managed to end with 19 points and five rebounds. Park-Lane added 19 points and six rebounds. For the Pirates, this game was lost in the third quarter. They were outscored by the Bluejays 23-13 and went on an almost five-minute run without hitting a basket.

Along with rebounding, the Pirates struggled from behind the line in tonight’s contest. They shot 58% as a team from the charity stripe with Desiree Elmore and Andra Espinoza- Hunter both missing three individually. The Pirates were never able to truly pull away from Creighton, and when the Pirates went ice cold, they capitalized.

Creighton will go on to play Marquette in the next round while the Pirates are praying that their regular season success can be enough to catapult this team into the NCAA Tournament.
