Coming into Thursday night on a five-game losing streak, the Seton Hall women’s soccer team looked to flip the script against fourth place St. John’s Red Storm at Owen T. Carroll Field.

After a 6-3 start that was a complete reversal from last season’s 2-9 finish, the Pirates have gone on an abysmal run in Big East play with their conference record sitting at 1-6 coming into Thursday night’s matchup against their conference rival Johnnies.

Despite the desire to change their recent losing streak, Seton Hall just could not muster a winning effort for the home crowd, as they would go on to lose 1-0. Compared to the Red Storm’s offensive production, the Pirates had difficulty putting up shots St. John’s could, getting outshot by their metro area counterpart, 15-7. The Johnnies doubled the Pirates’ shots on net as well, getting six boots on target compared to the home team’s three.

Thankfully, the Pirates stayed in the game thanks to a great effort by junior goalkeeper Grace Gordon, who made five saves on the night. She kept up her solid play, bringing her yearly save total to 75, toppling her career high of 68 from last season which was good enough for second in the conference.

The Pirates did keep their discipline throughout, as they only committed three fouls and had no offside penalties, but that effort was nullified thanks to their lackluster defense.

Freshman Cara Milne-Redhead led the team with two shots throughout the entire night, but fellow freshmen Sophie Liston, Caroline Lipton and senior Laura Hooper were the only three who could put their respective shots on target.

This unfortunate loss in the Pirates’ second to last home game of the season puts them in a difficult position. Once primed for a run into the Big East Tournament after a fantastic non-conference start, a difficult seven-game losing streak ties them with Villanova at the bottom of the conference and puts the nail in the coffin of any playoff hopes.

Seton Hall’s next game is their senior night at Owen T. Carroll Field against second place Georgetown on Sunday and then they close out the season in Providence on Thursday. Although not the end the squad had hoped for, they will try to end the season on a bang after still making major strides taken from last year.
