On Tuesday, the Seton Hall baseball team defeated the Monmouth Hawks, 4-3, in an 10-inning thriller. The Pirates are on fire, as they are now winners of their last three to improve to a 4-18 record.

The Pirates were led by Pat D’Amico, who finished today with a team-high two RBIs. Designated Hitter Collin Sheehan added two hits in five at-bats with the game-winning RBI double in the 10th inning.

Monmouth got to an early two-run in the first inning. Leadoff hitter Casey Caufield singled, then shortstop Dixon Black homered. The Pirates didn’t respond in the bottom half of the inning.

In the third inning, the Pirates made it a tied-ball game. Will Gale and Devin Hack got on base in back-to-back at-bats, then executed a double steal to get themselves in scoring position. Zack Sylvester was subsequently walked.

Only after 2.1 innings, Dante Ciaramella was pulled by the Hawks and replaced with Cory Hiltz. With the bases loaded, D’Amico hit an RBI single to bring home Gale and Hack.

The Pirates’ lead wouldn’t last long, as Monmouth would score again in the top of the fourth inning. A Jay Bant hit-by-pitch started the two-out rally and with back-to-back singles by Brady Mutz and Jake Catalano, Monmouth retook the lead.

In the sixth inning, Sheehan recorded his first hit of the day with a single to right fielder. Jonathan Luders pinch hit Oscar Murray and was able to bring home Sheehan with an RBI double.

The seventh and eighth innings were defined by excellent pitching, as neither team could get anything going offensively.

In the ninth inning, Monmouth had a chance to close out the game but couldn’t capitalize. They had two runners on-base with only one out, but Pirates reliever Drew Conover got out of the jam by striking out Black and forcing Alex Barker to ground out.

The Pirates walked the game off in the 10th inning, with Sheehan hitting an RBI double. He now has a team-high 11 RBIs on the season.

The Pirates will be back on the field tomorrow as they take on the Wagner Seahawks at 4 p.m. on Mike Sheppard Sr. Field. Jonathan Heite and Joe Matthews will be on the call. Be sure to tune in on wsou.net.
