Seton Hall baseball traveled down to Washington, D.C. to take on the George Washington Colonials and left with a 2-1 series win. After losing the first game in a barn burner 13-8 final score, the Pirates bounced back and took games two and three to win the series.

Friday afternoon, Seton Hall came out of the gate slow and that cost them in the end. In the first inning, starting pitcher Tyler Burnham showed his shakiness as he hit a batter then walked two straight to load the bases early on. Luckily for the Pirates in this inning, only one run scored as Derek Ripp advanced all runners on a fielder’s choice scoring Steve DiTomaso. Seton Hall was able to even it up in the top half of the second Casey Dana homered, but the bottom half proved to be a disaster.

Once again, the Colonials loaded the bases, but this time with Nick Payero pitching more damage was done. Four runs were scored in the inning, three off the bat of Noah Levin as he sent a double into the center field. Levin was the fourth run across the plate as he was singled home by Tyler Hix to give the Colonials a 5-1 lead the end of two. The third inning basically put the nail in the coffin for the Pirates, as although they got one back on a Jerry Huntzinger RBI, they once again allowed four runs. DiTomaso drove home the first run after a single up the middle, and with the bases loaded again, a new pitcher entered for the Pirates. Joe Cinella was brought in to stop the bleeding, but it did not work, as three more runs came across the plate courtesy of a Logan Leax and Levin to make it 9-2.

The Hall tried to rally back, scoring four in the fifth thanks to a wild pitch and a three-run homer by Tyler Schedler-McAvoy to cut the lead to 9-6 but in the end, it did not do much. The bottom of the fifth saw George Washington answer as Ripp had an RBI single to push the lead back out to 10-6. The seventh inning produced some scoring for each side, as a Dana double scored one and then a Schedler-McAcoy sacrifice fly scored another to cut the Colonials lead to two at 10-8.

However, once again, George Washington answered. Ripp once again has and RBI as a throwing error from relief pitcher Blaise Panzini allowed Hix to score. George Washington put the nail in the coffin in the bottom of the eighth as Leax and Barkman drove in two runs respectively to put the game out of reach at 13-8. The Pirates were not able to do anything in the top of the ninth and fell 13-8.

In game two, Seton Hall bounced back after a great pitching performance by the Pirates as both Ryan McLinskey and Christopher Shine shut out George Washington and the Pirates offense added eight runs. The scoring for the Hall started in the third after Matt Toke reached on a fielder’s choice and scored William Gale. Dana then hit a sacrifice fly that scored Huntzinger to give the Pirates an early 2-0 lead.

The Pirates were then kept off the board until the top of the eight when they erupted for five runs to put the game out of reach. Devin Hack provided the early scoring in the inning as he reached on a bunt and also scored Gale in the process. Them, after George Washington intentionally walked Dana to load the bases, Shedler-McAvory made them pay with a grand slam to make it 7-0. The Pirates added one more for good measure in the top of the ninth thanks to Huntzinger RBI, as the Pirates finished the game with an 8-0 victory.

In the final game, Seton Hall took the rubber match Saturday afternoon by a score of 8-4 as their offense once again provided the goods. Scoring started early, as in the top half of the first, Toke scored Huntzinger to give the Hall an early 1-0 lead.

However, George Washington answered right away as Levin and Ripp both had RBI’s. The Colonials took a two-run lead in the second after Cade Fergus got an RBI on a double to centerfield, which scored DiTomaso to make it 3-1 George Washington early. Seton Hall cut the deficit to one in the fourth, as Collin Sheehan doubled to center which scored Dana to make it 3-2.

In the sixth, Seton Hall took the lead as they scored three runs courtesy of poor pitching as Trevor Kuncl. Kuncl allowed all three runs to cross the plat by way of a hit by pitch, a walk, and a wild pitch. Seton Hall wouldn’t look back as two more runs crossed home in the seventh. The first came off an RBI single by freshman Zack Sylvester, and the second came because of more erratic pitching from the Colonials as wild pitch scored Shedler-McAvoy. The Colonials got one back in the bottom of the eighth as Eddie Micheletti Jr, scored on a sacrifice fly from Fergus to make it 7-4.

The Pirates decided to put the game out of reach in the ninth as an RBI from Gale sealed it and gave the Hall an 8-4 victory. A hard-fought serious no doubt, the Seton Hall Pirate showed their toughness by taking two games the George Washington Colonials.
