Recap: Pirates lose close one to Villanova in OT, 2-1

The Seton Hall Pirates Women’s Soccer team suffered a heartbreaking loss to Villanova in the rain, in overtime by a score of 2-1. The game was decided in the 101st minute by Villanova forward Sophia Kryza.

 

The Hall had a great defensive start to the match, allowing only one shot on goal in the first half. Seton Hall and Villanova shared a slow start, they entered the half tied 0-0. Seton Hall looked to set a faster pace in the second half, registering a shot on goal in the 47th minute by midfielder Laura Hooper, which was saved by Villanova goalkeeper Maria Thomas. The offense paid off in the 57th minute when the Pirates got a goal by midfielder Cassy Harrigan with an assist by Hooper.

 

The Pirates would hold the lead for just eight minutes, when Villanova forward Chloe O’Neill scored with an assist by midfielder Emma Weaver. The game would remain tied for the rest of regulation, with just three shots on goal registered for the rest of the half by both teams.

The deciding goal came in the second half of overtime, a shot by Kryza with an assist by Alexa Wojnovich. The sudden death goal sent the Hall home in upsetting fashion. Seton Hall totaled seven shots, six of which were on goal, and committed seven fouls. Villanova outshot the Hall with 12 total shots, five on goal, and added eight fouls for themselves.

 

With the goal, Cassy Harrigan now has three goals on the 2020 season, while Laura Hooper’s assist was her first of the season. The loss at Villanova was the Pirate’s fifth in a row, along with their second overtime loss in the last four games. The last win came against Saint Joseph’s University on Feb. 25. The Pirates are now 1-5 on the season, with an away record of 1-4.

 

Looking forward, the Pirates next game is against the Georgetown Hoyas, who are currently ranked No. 11 nationally. The Hoyas currently hold a record of 7-0-0. The game will be held at Owen T. Carroll Field in South Orange, N. J., on Sunday March 21, at 1:00 p.m. Coverage the game will be right here on 89.5 WSOU.
