After a thrilling back and forth game, the Seton Hall men’s basketball team (11-5, 2-4 conference) came out on the wrong end of this Big East matchup losing 72-73 to the Marquette Golden Eagles (12-6, 4-3 conference).

The team played relatively well, outrebounding Marquette by 21 and shot almost 42% from the floor, but it just wasn’t the Pirates afternoon.

Marquette took the driver’s seat early in the game by scoring nine three pointers in the first half alone. This offensive firepower was combat by the Pirates’ high shooting percentage of their own and vicious rebounding. After being down by 10 in the first half, Seton Hall clawed their way back and went into halftime trailing by only three.

The Pirates came out of the half guns blazing and continued its offensive takeover and tied the game at 46. After a back-and-forth second half, the entire game came down to one possession.

The score was tied at 72, and Marquette had the ball with the shot clock displaying nearly the same time as the game clock. A last second three was taken by Greg Elliott and a foul, that Seton Hall fans are still in disbelief of, was called on Seton Hall guard, Bryce Aiken.

Coach Kevin Willard did not hold back in letting the officials know his feelings toward the call. Regardless, Elliott went to the charity stripe and made one of two shots to put Marquette up by one with 1.5 seconds left.

After some initial confusion, the Pirates inbound pass went awry, and Marquette prevented any last second shot opportunity. Although the foul was called on Bryce Aiken, he surely wasn’t the reason Seton Hall lost.

Aiken got a start today and made the most of the opportunity, by leading the team in points and capped a season-high with 28. At one point, he was a perfect 4/4 from behind the arc and added four rebounds to his final line.

Teammate Ike Obiagu played exactly how I described in the preview article. He was a complete menace in the paint, altering and blocking shots left and right. He finished the game with a season high in both the block category and rebound category with seven and 13 respectively.

Jared Rhoden had a typical Rhoden performance, scoring 12 points, grabbing three boards, and recording both a block and an assist. Rhoden’s shot creation and ball movement is a large part as to why Seton Hall’s offense didn’t falter and was proficient throughout the game.

As for Marquette, Darryl Morsell led the way in scoring with 28 points, but it was Greg Eliott who hit a clutch free throw with under two seconds remaining to seal the deal for Marquette. Justin Lewis also tallied 18 points and three steals to cap off the victory.

After next Tuesday’s Providence contest was postponed due to COVID issues within the Friars’ program, the Pirates’ next game will be against St. John’s at Madison Square Garden on Jan. 22.
