The Seton Hall Pirates (2-1-1) and the St. Joseph’s Hawks (0-4) fought in South Orange, NJ on Sunday, with the Pirates emerging victorious in a 2-0 shutout.

The match didn’t start as planned for the Pirates, as defender Chiara Pucci got tagged for a yellow card just four minutes and change into the first half.

The offense quickly woke up after that, when Emma Sheehan got the ball past St. Joe’s goalie and tapped it in for the game’s first goal and her first goal on the season.

Seton Hall almost scored a second goal in the 29th minute, but an offsides call put an end to that scoring opportunity.

For most of the first half, the Pirate defense was completely shutting down the Hawks’ offense. They didn’t have a shot on net until the 30th minute when Sam Dumont had an opportunity to score but was quickly shut down by Seton Hall goalie Grace Gordon.

Yellow cards continued to fly for the Pirates as Abbie Roberts picked one up in the 34th minute.

Similar to the first yellow card, the Hall responded by scoring minutes later. Off the assist from Phoebe Hampson, Sophomore Natalie Tavana dribbled past multiple defenders before booting a shot straight into the net to make it 2-0.

Coming out of halftime, St. Joe’s looked to challenge Seton Hall, showing much more aggression than they did in the first half, although it didn’t result in any goals.

The Pirates would pick up three more yellow cards in the second half on Emma Sheehan, Erica Behr, and Maddy DeCola, respectively.

Overall, the Pirates played a solid game, but it was not without blemishes. In addition to the five yellow cards, the Pirates committed 13 fouls. It helped that the Hawks also committed 11 fouls and picked up two yellow cards of their own.

Seton Hall’s 11 shots and five shots on goal were key to winning this game. The offense came out of the gate on fire and, although they played more conservatively in the second half, were dominant.

Their season continues on Sept. 4th at 1:00 pm, when the Pirates face off against the Delaware Blue Hens (1-1-1) here at Owen T. Carroll Field.
