Pirates pull off a sweep of Georgetown

The Seton Hall Pirates picked up their second in-conference win Wednesday night, defeating the Georgetown Hoyas 3-0.

The Pirates extended the Hoyas’ losing streak to four gamesfh with their win and the Pirates got a sweep of their own after getting swept by the Creighton Bluejays this past Saturday. The Pirates got off to a strong start in set one, taking a commanding 5-2 lead early in the set. Later in the set, the team went on a 7-0 run and took a 14-6 lead over the Hoyas. The Pirates scored six of the last seven points during the set and took a 1-0 lead in the match with a 25-13 win in set one.

Set two was much of the same as the Pirates got off to a 4-1 lead early in the set and went on three separate 3-0 runs during the set. After the Hoyas were gaining momentum later in the set, going on a 4-0 and cutting the Pirates’ lead to 17-16, the Pirates took a timeout. Out of the timeout, the Pirates went on a 5-0 run of their own and scored eight of the last 10 points of the set, winning 25-18 and taking a 2-0 lead in the match.

Set three had one of just three instances where the Hoyas had a lead over the Pirates. Not for long though, as the Pirates scored four of the next five points after trailing 1-0 early in the set. The Pirates went on two separate 3-0 runs during set three and ended up winning the set 25-19 and the match 3-0.

In an interview after the game, head coach Allison Yaeger spoke on what was preached in practice after being swept this past Saturday. Yaeger said, “Our serve receives, we really had to work on our serve receives and getting back in systems so that Maggie [Cvelbar] can distribute the ball to everybody, and that’s what we did.

Yaeger also spoke on the team’s upcoming matchup against Xavier and Butler, saying, “Going into Xavier and Butler is a huge weekend for us. Both of those teams went five [sets] with Georgetown and we just beat Georgetown in three. It shows anybody can beat anybody on any given day and everybody is tough in this conference. If we can get one on the road, that’s great, if we can get two, which is our ultimate goal, that would be awesome.”

The Pirates’ record now sits at 7-12 overall and 2-3 in the Big East Conference. Haylee Gasser led the Pirates with nine kills during the match and Maggie Cvelbar led the Pirates with 26 assists and one service ace.

The Pirates’ next match is Friday, October 11, at the Cintas Center in Cincinnati, Ohio.
