Pirates drop three straight sets to St. John's for the second time this weekend

The Seton Hall women’s volleyball team lost to St. John's in three straights this Sunday, November 17, this extends their losing streak to 11 games. They now have an overall record of 7-23 and a in conference record of 2-14

The St. John's Red Storm got out to an early lead in the first set going up 4-1 almost immediately. They would go on to lead 7-2 forcing Seton Hall to call a timeout. Out of the timeout the Pirates would go on a 4-2 run before St. John's would go on a 6-1 run of their own, 15-7 Red Storm. This would force Seton Hall to take another timeout. The Pirates would score two quick points out of the timeout forcing St. John's to take one of their own, 15-9 Red Storm. Out of the timeout Seton Hall would go on a 5-2 run to make it 18-14. St Johns would go on one final 7-2 run to win set one 25-16.

In the second set, St. Johns would once again take an early lead going up 5-1. They would continue this dominance by going on a 6-3 run to force a Seton Hall timeout, 11-4 Red Storm. Despite scoring first out of the timeout the Pirates would lose the set, 25-18 after going point for St. John's.

In the third and final set St. John's would continue to show their strength by taking the early lead, 6-2. The Pirates however were not willing to give up easily and went on a 4-2 run to force a St. John’s timeout, 8-6, St. John's. The Red Storm would go on a 6-4 run out of their timeout, 14-10.

This was followed by a 4-3 run by the Pirates before they took a timeout of their own, 17-14, St. John’s. The Red Storm would go a 4-2 run forcing another timeout by the Hall, 21-16. The Pirates would go on a 4-3 run in an attempt to battle back before St. Johns would ultimately win the set and the match on a service error, 25-20.

In the tough loss the Pirates were led on the stat sheet by seniors Haylee Gasser and Maggie Cvelbar as well as by junior Amanda Rachwal. Gasser finished the game with 12 kills and two block assists as well as a service ace for a total of 14 points. Cvelbar had 15 assists and single service ace while Rachwal ended with six kills and four block assists.

The Pirates will be in action again on Friday, November 22, in their final home game of the season as they take on Villanova (20-8) at 7 p.m. This will be followed by a trip to Georgetown for their last regular season game.
