Date: October 18, 2018

By Joseph Binder

The Seton Hall women’s soccer team fell to the Xavier Musketeers 3-0 in their final home match of the 2018 season.

After both teams traded a pair of shots early, the Musketeers opened up the scoring in the 10th minute. Sophomore Carrie Lewis scored off an assist from junior Samantha Dewey for a light tap in and a 1-0 lead.

The Pirates did threaten offensively at times. In the 25th minute, junior Eva Gonzalez fired a rocket but just missed high. The team ended with 7 shots compared to the Musketeers’ 15.

In the second half, Xavier had several opportunities to score. In the 60th  minute, Molly McLaughlin had back-to-back headers off of free kicks but one was saved, and the other sailed wide. Sophomore Emily Burton managed to capitalize a short time later however, to make it 2-0 Musketeers. Then, Samantha Dewey scored her 8th goal of the season in the 85th minute to seal the deal, making it 3-0.

Looking ahead to the final games of the season, head coach Rick Stainton hinted that he would still like to see progress out of his team. “For us, it’s about playing for pride… showing that we can compete in this league, and just trying to learn more about ourselves so that we can continue to move forward and develop.”

The Pirates next match will come on the road against the Providence Friars on Sunday, October 21st at 1 PM. It will be the first of the Hall’s final two road games to close out the season.
