The Seton Hall Pirates (5-8-2, 1-6-0 Conf.) welcomed the Creighton Blue Jays (8-1-5, 4-2-1 Conf.) to a home match at Owen T. Carroll Field, with the Hall falling to Creighton, 2-1.

Due to an impending thunderstorm the game was moved up an hour, taking place at 5 p.m.

Going into the match, Seton Hall sat at 1-5-0 in Big East play, and a win against the Blue Jays would be crucial to getting back on track in conference play.

Things did not start off the way the Pirates would have liked. After holding Creighton to 24 scoreless minutes, the Blue Jays broke the tie. The goal was scored by English defender Hannah Luke. Star midfielder Aida Kardovic was credited with an assist.

The Hall failed to get anything going during the first thirty minutes of regulation, putting zero shots on goal.

However, towards the end of the first period, the Pirates threatened to tie the game, rattling off four shots in just 10 minutes. On each shot they came up empty, putting an end to a disappointing first half.

At the 69th minute of the second half, the Pirates tied the game. Newly acquired American University transfer Skyler Matusz scored the tying goal assisted by defender Alex Fugle.

Late in the game, Creighton broke the tie. Forward Adriana Mondiri scored the go-ahead goal in the 85th minute. Her goal was unassisted.

The go-ahead goal by Mondiri proved to be the game winner, as in the end, Creighton left South Orange with a victory.

Seton Hall now sits at 5-8-2 on the year and a disappointing 1-6 in Big East play.

Creighton improved their record to a solid 8-1-5.

The loss can be attributed to a poor defensive showing, as the Blue Jays outshot the Pirates 18 to 8.

While it may not have been the result Seton Hall wanted, some things are bigger than the outcome on a soccer pitch.

The match was held in honor of Mary Jennings, a standout student-athlete for the Pirates. Tragically, Jennings passed away in 2006, following a battle with cancer. Jennings lost her life at 21 as she was going into her senior year.

“She was much more than a soccer player,” said teammate Megan Fenton. “Mary was a beautiful person, inside and out.”

Jennings was an integral part of her team and Seton Hall. Her passing had a devastating impact on the Pirate community.

Seton Hall University offers the Mary L. Jennings scholarship to incoming education majors in her honor.

For their next game, the Pirates will fly to Chicago to take on the DePaul Blue Demons (2-10). WSOU Sports will continue to have coverage on that game and the rest of the Pirates soccer season.
