WSOU Announces Special Holiday Programming

Date: December 17, 2014

South Orange, N.J.–WSOU 89.5 FM, the radio station of Seton Hall University, unveils its line-up of special programming for the holidays. Highlights include A Franciscan Christmas (Dec. 24, 8 p.m.) with Brother Greg Cellini,A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols(Dec. 25.9 a.m.) recorded live at Seton Hall's Chapel of the Immaculate Conception, and WSOU's annual Top 89 Countdown on January 1st at noon. As is WSOU's tradition, the station will broadcast Mass live on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. From Dec. 13 through Dec. 24, WSOU's regular loud rock music programming will include holiday classics covered by heavy metal, punk, hardcore, and post-hardcore bands.

The 12 Days of Metal,Dec. 13 –Dec. 24

WSOU rocks the season with holiday songs to get listeners into the holiday spirit, plus chances to win "12 Days of Metal" prize packs. Songs included covers of Christmas and Hanukah classics by The Ramones, Motorhead, August Burns Red, Gods of Fire, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Christopher Lee, and many more. 

Sunday, Dec. 21

The Decompressions Christmas Special(8 p.m.) –Two hours of traditional Christmas carols and songs by a variety of artists from the 1940s to the present. In addition, Decompressions host by Frank Scafidi and Campus Buzz co-hosts Caroline Pinsky and Ryan Stetz will share their personal recollections about Christmas.

WSOU Christmas Eve Programming,Dec. 24

A Franciscan Christmas(8 - 10 p.m.) –Brother Greg Cellini of the Franciscan Brothers of Brooklyn hosts this Christmas Eve call-in program exploring the theme of "Sharing the Good." Brother Greg's guests include Seton Hall staff and students involved with the school's Division of Volunteer Efforts (DOVE). Also featured are choral works performed by a Gregorian Schola and a sharing of the story about how St. Francis of Assisi was instrumental in helping the Nativity scene become a universal symbol of Christmas. Listener calls will be welcomed throughout the program at 973-761-WSOU.

Mass(10 p.m.- Midnight) –Live broadcast of the Christmas Eve Mass from Our Lady of Sorrows Church in South Orange, NJ.

Seton Hall Christmas Message(midnight) –Christmas greetings from Seton Hall University President A. Gabriel Esteban, followed by an hour of religious Christmas music.

Christmas Power Cuts(1- 6 a.m.) –Blocks of Christmas carols covered by heavy metal bands.

WSOU Christmas Day Programming,Dec. 25

Christmas Oratorio(6 a.m.) –WSOU's annual presentation of Johann Sebastian Bach's Christmas Oratorio. This airing of Bach's choral masterwork has become a Seton Hall tradition. For 2014, WSOU offers listeners a recording of the Christmas Oratorio by the Choir of Trinity College Cambridge and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, conducted by Stephen Layton.

Home for the Holidays with Tom Brokaw and Alfie Boe(8:30 a.m.) –Tom Brokaw reads the Christmas Story from the Gospel of Luke and tenor Alfie Boe performs I'll be Home for Christmas, Angels from the Realms of Glory, Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, and other classic carols.  

A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols(9:00 a.m.) –Biblical readings and carols in celebration of the season, performed by the Seton Hall University choir and recorded inside the campus' Chapel of the Immaculate Conception.

Sports and Spirituality(10 a.m.) –Professional and college sports have become ubiquitous during the holiday season. From college bowl games on Christmas Eve to the NBA's annual line-up of Christmas Day games, the world of secular sports has become woven into the fabric of a religious holiday. Father Warren Hall, director of Seton Hall's Office of Campus Ministry and a regular lecturer on sports and spirituality, discusses the intersection of sports and faith and how even the most fanatic fans can find the true meaning of Christmas both on and off the field. 

A Tradition of Christmas(10:30 a.m.) –Traditional Christmas songs performed by a large chorus and orchestra, including the classics Joy to the World, Silent Night, and Oh Come All Ye Faithful.

Mass(11 a.m.) –Christmas Day Mass live from Our Lady of Sorrows Church in South Orange, NJ, followed by the annual Christmas greeting from Seton Hall University President A. Gabriel Esteban.

Christmas Mix(Noon) –Christmas carols and songs the whole family a sing along to.

A Merry Metal Christmas(12:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.) –A festive mix of music for hard rockers.

WSOU New Year's Eve Programming

Street Patrol(8 p.m.) –WSOU's long-running program devoted to unsigned bands presents a New Year's Eve retrospective of the most requested and played songs produced by local metal bands in 2014.

WSOU New Year's Day Programming

The Loudest New Year(midnight - 6 a.m.) –As the clock strikes midnight to ring in 2015, WSOU starts spinning its very loudest rock to carry head-banging revelers through the night until dawn.

The Top 89 Countdown–Beginning at noon, WSOU counts down the Top 89 Heavy Metal, Punk, Hardcore, Post-Hardcore, and loud rock albums from 2014. Listeners will have the chance to win WSOU prize packs during the countdown.
