WSOU Donates to the Community Food Bank of New Jersey as Part of "Students Change Hunger" Program

Date: December 1, 2015

South Orange, N.J. – To assist in the constant struggle to end hunger in America, , Seton Hall University’s WSOU 89.5 FM teamed up with the Community Food Bank of New Jersey to participate in this year’s “Students Change Hunger” program. Staff members from WSOU brought in nearly 350 pounds of food for those in need this holiday season.

WSOU was able to greatly increase its donations to the Community Food Bank of New Jersey from its substantial donation totals last year. The second annual food drive kicked off on College Radio Day, which WSOU and other college radio stations around the country celebrated on Oct. 2.

Prior to the food drive kick off, WSOU invited Seton Hall Alumni and the Community Food Bank Hunger Action Coordinator Laura Sodano to come on air and speak about the Food Bank, hunger in New Jersey, and how listeners could help.

WSOU’s donation of nearly 350 pounds of food was brought to the Community Food Bank of New Jersey Headquarters in Hillside, NJ on Nov. 20.

“It was great to see how much food the staff members at WSOU were able to collect in a little over a month,” says Station Manager Erica Szczepaniak. “We nearly doubled our donation totals from last year, and we hope to keep increasing our donations to really give back to the community.”

WSOU plans to continue to participate in the “Students Change Hunger Program” with their annual College Radio Day Food Drive in years to come.  “This started as a student-led effort and it has been inspiring to see that the students of WSOU and Seton Hall rally to address a real community need,” says General Manager Mark Maben. “I am proud that helping the hungry in New Jersey has quickly become a valued station tradition.”

Charities all around America celebrate Giving Tuesday today, December 1st, to follow the spirit of Thanksgiving and to raise awareness and donations for charitable organizations around the Holiday season. For more information on Giving Tuesday, click here.
