Join WSOU at this Weekend’s South by South Orange Festival

Austin, Texas isn't the only place with a "south by." This weekend, the village of South Orange, New Jersey hosts South by South Orange (SOxSO), one-of-a-kind annual event showcasing the outstanding creative atmosphere of South Orange and celebrating the rich diversity of the town's residents involved in the arts, music, and ideas. For three days (June, 26-28), South Orange will be alive with "creative collisions" of arts, ideas and music -- from live drone demonstrations to coding concerts, compelling talks to live blues, rock and jazz, SOxSO has something for everyone! On Saturday, June 27, WSOU will participate in SOxSO in two exciting ways:

·WSOU Live On the Creative Midway -- Join WSOU 89.5 FM, Seton Hall University's radio station, as we broadcast live from the SOxSO Creative Midway on Saturday, June 27 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Meet WSOU staff members and come spin the prize wheel. And check out all the activity on the Creative Midway! Location: Spiotta Park, downtown South Orange, NJ

·SoMetal: Heavy Metal and Social Activism, a Creative Collision–It may seem counterintuitive that people who enjoy intense, loud, rebellious music are more likely to engage in civic activism, but that is exactly what research and experience suggests about heavy metal musicians and their fans. Join local resident and clinical psychologist Dr. Michael Friedman and WSOU program director Steve Varsanyi for a discussion of today's hard rock music scene and why metal bands and fans are deeply involved in community engagement and charitable activities. Mike and Steve will also spin a few of their favorite bands and talk about how the band or the album has helped change society and individuals. Noon to 1 p.m. on the Creative Midway and broadcast live on WSOU 89.5 FM, wsou.net, and on the iHeartRadio app.  Location: Spiotta Park, downtown South Orange, NJ
