World Cup Update: June 22nd

The Group of Death continued to live up to its name on Sunday in Brazil, and it did not end on a friendly note for the Stars and Stripes. Sylvestre Varela received a cross from Cristiano Ronaldo with just over 30 seconds of added time remaining and headed in a game-tying goal to keep Portugal alive in Group G. All four teams remain alive as the United States stands at the top of the group with Germany. The two face off Thursday at noon while Portugal and Ghana will square off simultaneously. The US will clinch a berth into the Round of 16 with a win or a draw, and can achieve a berth with a loss. The result of Ghana and Portugal will play a factor if the US were to lose. The game-tying goal came after Clint Dempsey received a deflection and hit the ball of his chest into the back of the net in the 81st minute. The US had 10 shots on goal to Portugal’s nine, as the Americans tied the game with a bullet from the top of the box from Jermaine Jones in the 64th minute. It was Portugal who broke out to an early lead as the US encountered issues with getting the ball out of their own box. The ball was deflected to the right side of the box, with Nani finishing in the fifth minute.
