Women's soccer falls 3-0 at Butler

Date: September 27, 2018

By Wilnir Louis

Seton Hall women’s soccer was unsuccessful at finding their first conference win of the season Thursday night, as they were defeated by Butler 3-0 in Indianapolis.

Butler was able to notch their first shot on goal within 4 minutes of the match starting, and they were able to get their first corner within the first 6 minutes of the game as they opened with an aggressive pace. For comparison, Seton Hall notched their first shot on goal in the 27th minute and their first corner in the 32nd minute.

Before Seton Hall’s first shot however, Butler was able to find the back of the net to lead 1-0 in the match. Anja Savich was able to get her first goal of the season after a beautiful pass by Cassidy Blacha that was at least 40 yards.

After that, neither team scored. At the end of the first half, Butler still led 1-0. Butler also outshot Seton Hall eight shots to one in the first half.

The Bulldogs were able to strike quickly to start the second half, as they scored their second goal of the match just 1 minute and 15 seconds in. Halle Stelbasky got her third goal of the Season after an assist by Madison Toth that extended Butler’s lead to 2-0.

Butler was not done scoring, as Butler was able to get a 3-0 lead in an odd way. Amanda Kowalski kicked a corner kick for Butler, and Anna Maclean seemed to misjudge the ball as the kick sailed over her hands and curved into the net.

Seton Hall would have an opportunity to score with 14 minutes left in the match, however, they could not capitalize when Leonie Doege was on the ground. At the end of the match, Butler outshot the Pirates 18-2, and had a 9-2 shots on goal advantage.

A bright side for the Pirates in this game was that a majority of the team was able to get on the field and log some minutes and experience playing a collegiate game. Another bright side is that the Pirates have an opportunity to redeem themselves back at Owen T Carrol Field when they welcome the undefeated Hoyas for the Mary Jennings Memorial Game on September 30. This game will be broadcasted live on 89.5 FM and on streaming on the iHeartRadio app. The start of that game will be at 1pm, with Matt Ambrose and Rich Behan on the call.
