The Seton Hall Pirates fell to St. John’s 2-0 on Saturday night, due to a pair of goals from Zsani Kajan.

The Pirates came into this game trying to build off a strong finish in their last game against Creighton and they looked evenly matched with St. John’s in the first 45 minutes. It was a slow half as neither team had any clear goal scoring opportunities, but the Pirates were able to take more shots than the Red Storm. Seton Hall outshot St. John's 4-3, but St. John’s had the only shot on target which resulted in a save by Anna Maclean. The game went into the half tied at 0-0.

The second half couldn’t have started worse for the Pirates, as Kajan scored the opening goal just 24 seconds into the second half of play. Seton Hall head coach Rick Stainton addressed the goal by saying “We know we’re not a team that scores multiple goals every game, so conceding that first goal was almost like a punch in the gut for all of us”.

The second half played out much more offensively then the first as both teams put up higher shot totals after the halftime. St. John's was able to turn 10 shots, and 5 on goal into 2 goals. The second goal came from Kajan as well after she made a nice ball turn and ran past two Pirates defenders before slotting the ball into the bottom right corner of the net with around 26 minutes left to play in the second half.

Stainton praised his seniors after the game, saying that “These are great character kids who came in everyday with great attitudes and worked very hard.”

He also believes they have set an example for the younger players, noting that “We didn’t stop when we were down 2. We’re finishing with shot opportunities and we’re always fighting… and that’s because of the seniors who have done a tremendous steering and pioneering for us”.

The next game for Seton Hall comes on Thursday October 18th at 6:30 pm, as the Pirates host Xavier for the last home game of the season.
