Women's basketball falls at #1 UConn, 99-61

Seton Hall lost to the #1 UConn Huskies 99-61 on Saturday afternoon at the XL Center in Hartford, Connecticut.

 

The Huskies jumped out on a 12-3 run in the first 4:11 of the game when Napheesa Collier sank one of two free throw attempts. The Pirates trailed 25-5 with 3:35 left in the first quarter when Christyn Williams knocked down a three point jumper from the left wing. At the 2:06 mark, Desiree Elmore’s layup brought Seton Hall within 13 points as they were behind 26-13. UConn would finish the final two minutes of the first quarter on a 9-0 run, as they led Seton Hall 35-13.

 

UConn led 43-16 at the 5:29 mark in the second quarter, when Olivia Nelson-Ododa scored on a three point play in transition after being fouled. With 1:27 left, Shadeen Samuels was fouled on her made layup attempt and she sank the lone free throw. The Huskies ended the half leading Seton Hall 61-29.

 

To begin the third quarter, Nicole Jimenez made a layup during a fast break and the Pirates trailed 61-31 with just 57 seconds into the second half. With 5:51 left on the clock, UConn’s Collier scored a put-back layup to extend the Husky lead to 70-35. After a takeaway, Nicole Jimenez rushed down the floor to score a breakaway basket and the Pirates trailed 73-41 with 1:39 left in the third. Nelson-Ododa’s layup with 31 seconds left would give the Huskies a 75-41 lead to end the third quarter.   

 

Seton Hall’s Danielle Robinson hit a three point shot on the left wing with just 21 seconds into the final quarter and the Pirates trailed 75-44. Crystal Dangerfield stole the ball and sank a three pointer in transition with 5:49 left in the game and the Huskies were on top of Seton Hall 79-53. Katie Lou Samuelson made a three point shot at the 3:55 mark and it gave the Huskies an 89-58 advantage. With 2:04 remaining in the game, Nelson-Ododa’s layup extended UConn’s lead to 94-61. Kyla Irwin’s three pointer on the right wing with 45 seconds left gave UConn a 99-61 lead and that would be the final score from the XL Center.

 

Despite the loss, Jimenez led the Pirates in scoring with 23 points, as she shot 9-20 from the field. Jimenez has a combined 56 points over the last two games. Freshman forward Robinson contributed 10 points in just 10 minutes of play against UConn.

 

The defeat gives Seton Hall an overall record of 7-2. The Pirates next play on December 20th when they head down to West Palm Beach, Florida to play in the West Palm Beach Invitational against Georgia Tech.
