Volleyball drops first Big East match 3-1

Seton Hall lost to Villanova 3-1 in four sets in the opening match of Big East play.

The Wildcats initially took control of the first set by taking a 9-5 lead until the Pirates stormed back and made it a 14-13 contest. After the Wildcats took a 23-22 lead, the Pirates called a crucial timeout and went on to win the first set with Abby Thelen recording two kills to secure a set victory.  

In the second set, the Wildcats had control of the entire set, which was evident when they had a convincing 14-10 lead over The Hall. Villanova won the second set 25-21 and tied the match at one a piece.

The third game saw an 8-1 run by Villanova as they jumped out to an 18-11 lead and the Pirates stormed back to tie the game at 19. Villanova went on to defeat the Pirates in this set by a score of 25-20.

Early on, the Pirates overcame a five-two deficit by going out on an eleven to four run but that lead went away as the Wildcats hung tight for the remainder of the set. Villanova scored the final three points in an entertaining fourth set, as they defeated the Pirates 25-23.

The leading scorer for the Pirates was Thelen, as she registered 20 kills in her team’s losing effort. Caitlin Koska added an impressive 13 kills to the night’s action. Sophia Coffey contributed 26 assists for Seton Hall, while Eden Dolezal registered 14 digs.

The Wildcats advance to an 8-5 record (1-0 in the Big East). The Pirates are now 5-9 on the season (0-1 in the Big East) and host Butler at Walsh Gymnasium on Friday night.
