Top Fifteen Golfers Right Now

Date: June 18, 2018

By Mat Mlodzinski

This past Sunday, Brooks Koepka was able to shoot a Sunday 68, good enough to win 2018 U.S. Open. Koepka won the U.S. Open last year as well, giving him two major victories, and three total wins on tour.

The big thing here is where Koepka ranks among current PGA Tour golfers. If this were a power ranking, it’d be pretty easy. Koepka would be near the top, probably in the top five. However, golf works a little differently. It’s more about which golfers bring more of a draw at tournaments they participate in. I decided to use my own golf knowledge, and come up with the top 15 current golfers based on their fame, tournaments won, recent success, and overall likeability.

Tier 1: Current Legends

Tiger Woods: Any time Woods is in a tournament field, fans come out in droves. He’s won 14 majors, 79 PGA victories, and revolutionized the game.

Phil Mickelson: If it weren’t for Woods, Lefty would be number one on this list. Again, a very big draw, he is a people person, and a top 10 golfer of all time.

Tier 2: Today’s Superstars

Jordan Spieth: A couple more wins on tour and Spieth might be ready to join tier 1. Probably the best young golfer, Jordan highlights the upcoming Traveler’s Championship at TPC River Highlands this week.

Rory McIlroy: McIlroy would be in tier 1, but he really hasn’t had the best past couple of years. Overall though, he is a huge name on tour, and will also be playing in the Traveler’s.

Dustin Johnson: Johnson has won 19 tournaments, is the one of the longest hitters on tour, and has overcome a rough past.

Tier 3: Today’s All-Stars

Justin Thomas: JT is probably the fastest growing young golfer. He’s won six PGA Tour events in the past two years, including the 2017 PGA Championship.

Rickie Fowler: Fowler is probably best known for his flashy ways of dressing, but is also a big time name on tour. At 29 years old, he’s been ranked as high as fourth in the World Golf Rankings, and has come in third place or better in every single major.

Jason Day: Day has had a lackluster 2018 to say the least, but is still a big draw. At 30 years old, he’s already won 12 PGA Tour tournaments, with one major.

Bubba Watson: Bubba has the coolest name on tour, learned how to play golf without taking a lesson, and has 11 PGA Tour victories.

Tier 4: Big names on the brink

Sergio Garcia: At one point, Sergio was the best golfer to never win a major. That all changed in 2017, and he sees himself at number 10 on this list.

Adam Scott: Adam has had to change his game a bit when the belly putter was banned. However, he’s won one major, along with 12 other PGA Tour wins.

Justin Rose: Rose has been on fire lately, with two PGA wins since October of 2017. At 37 years old, he’s aging, but is still a very big name on tour.

Patrick Reed: “Captain America” really made a name for himself in the 2016 Ryder Cup, going back and forth in a match with McIlory. He most recently won the 2018 Master’s.

Brooks Koepka: At 28, Koepka is still very young. He lacks the amount of total wins on tour, with just three. However, with two U.S. Open’s he had to be included.

Henrik Stenson: Stenson is known for the best irons on tour and is also a very big name in any tournament.
