The injury bug hits two New York franchises

Injuries can prove to define games, season and sadly careers. Some of the biggest stars, poised to be remembered for decades after retirement, were left as some of the biggest what if scenarios to date.

Both the Jets and Mets have been storied and talked about all summer. Uncharacteristically, for all the right reason. Yet every team faces adversity due to injury. Here is a summary for both teams.

New York Mets

After a storied run that brought them from one of their most depressed times in franchise history to being only two games behind the wild card, the Mets received two significant blows right during crunch towards the end of the season. Jeff McNeil injured his Hamstring trying to beat out a ground ball at first base.

McNeil had become a key player for the Mets this season on both sides of the ball. This injury comes at a crucial point for his own legacy as well, as he was leading the league in Batting Average. J.D Davis slightly injured his calf but was able to play shortly after.

This season has seen it fair share of injuries for the metropolitans, with fans still awaiting the debut of Jed Lowrie and the return of Brandon Nimmo. Not to mention the enigma that is Yoenis Cespedes still creeps into the thoughts of Mets fans every now and then. The Mets are still in a prime position to slide into a wildcard spot as they hope to continue their Cinderella Story.

New York Jets

The Jets have been one of the busiest teams this off-season. With necessary additions to the offensive line, stacking up their young defensive and winning the free agency with the addition of Le’Veon Bell. For the first time in a long time, Gang Green has had something to be excited about.

All seemed to true to be real, and it would show to be true when Linebacker Avery Williamson would tear his ACL in the preseason matchup between the Falcons.

Williamson, who had only missed one game in his five-year NFL career, will now miss the entire 2019-20 season. Williams played a big role for the jets in his first season in New York last year with three sacks, 120 tackles and two forced fumbles.

Controversy immediately stirred as fans were shaking their head as to why Williamson was playing deep into the first half. Head coach Adam Gase takes the blame for Injury, and as a precaution is keeping  Bell off the field until the regular season.

In some bright news, safety Marcus Maye is expected to be healthy in time for week one. Maye had been sidelined with injury for substantial time in his young career, yet is expected to be a bright light in the struggling secondary. The Jets can still, make a big push this season. It’ll be fun to see who steps up as a result of Williamsons injury.

Injury catches teams from all leagues by surprise. However, every wise man knows that it does not matter how many times you are knocked down, but how many times you’re able to get back up.

Adversity builds character, both teams have the capability to make names for themselves this season. The Mets still have plenty of baseball to play and the Jets still have time to make the necessary roster moves for successful season. It’s time to step and show some New York grit.
