WSOU Special Thanksgiving Programming

Date: November 20, 2018

South Orange, N.J. – WSOU 89.5 FM, the student-run radio station of Seton Hall University, will air special programming for the extended Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Highlights include throwbacks to music from the 1980s and 1990s, a unique “Black Metal Friday” for the traditional Black Friday shopping day, and insider’s commentary focused on the new album by hardcore supergroup Death Ray Vision.

WSOU kicks off the holiday weekend on Wednesday, Nov. 21 with a track-by-track introduction of all the songs on “Negative Mental Attitude.” At the top of each hour on 89.5 FM, Mike D’Antonio will introduce a different song from the band’s new album, offering insights on each track. Death Ray Vision is an American hardcore band consisting of members and former members of the bands Killswitch Engage, Overcast, Seemless, and Soul Remnants. This track-by-track introspective is exclusive to WSOU.

The station’s Thanksgiving weekend programming continues on Thursday, Nov. 22, with throwback power cuts of metal bands from the 1980s, including Motorhead, Iron Maiden, Slayer, Megadeth, and more.

On Friday, Nov. 23, WSOU celebrates Black Friday with “Black Metal Friday.” Throughout the day, the station will feature some of the heaviest metal around. Black metal is a subgenre of heavy metal music that features fast tempos, distorted guitars, blast-beats, screaming vocals, unconventional song structure, and a generally aggressive style. “The energy and catharsis provided by black metal makes it the perfect music for the chaos and joy that comes from the Black Friday shopping experience,” noted WSOU Music Director Katherine Wilson. Also on Friday, all black clothing in the WSOU online merch store will be discounted in honor of Black Friday.

WSOU wraps up its Thanksgiving holiday weekend on Saturday, Nov. 24 with 1990s throwback power cuts. Listeners will hear bands such as Pantera, Judas Priest, Sepultura and Anthrax, among others.

“We know that the holidays can be stressful, that’s why we decided to give our listeners some unique and special programming for the long Thanksgiving holiday,” said Program Director Charlotte Slocum. “Listening to your favorite music along with the DJs you love is a wonderful way to enjoy any day, especially a holiday.
