The Seton Hall Pirates could do no wrong in an exhibition game against the Misericordia Cougars, in which they won in a blowout 112-38.

The Pirates wasted no time getting the game started, as star senior Myles Powell began the game 3/3 beyond the arch. In total, Powell went 6/8 from the three-point line in the first half, finishing with 20 points in the half. In contrast, the Cougars scored 18 points throughout the first half led by Patrick Douthit who totaled four points in the half.

At the end of the first half the Pirates led the Cougars 56-18. The Hall lead the Cougars in almost every offensive stat possible including, field goal percentage 56.4-25.9, three-point field goal percentage 46.7-26.7 and assists 11-5. The Pirates also dominated the boards in the half with 26 rebounds to the Cougars 13.

The Pirates defense was firing on all cylinders as they totaled 25 steals to the Cougars’ three steals. In total the Misericordia Cougars had an astounding 31 turnovers. Leading the Pirates defensively was freshman Tyrese Samuel, who got three steals and boarded four defensive rebounds.

Samuel excited the crowd in his second game of the season as he clocked 16 minutes and put up 11 points, going 5/7 from the field and adding three assists. The Pirates came out in the second half with more of the same from the first half, absolutely dominating the Cougars defensively with 13 steals as well as owning the court offensively in a team effort, putting up 13 assists and scoring 56 points to close out the game 112-38.

One of the most memorable plays of the half was when senior walk-on guard Asiah Avent scored a lay-up with 4:16 left in the half. The Seton Hall bench erupted in support for Avent, who appeared in just three games for the Hall last season. Two players that had a fantastic night for the pirates were forward Jared Rhoden, who put up 15 points, two assists and three steals in 26 minutes, as well as guard Myles Cale, who put up 15 points, two assists and three steals as well in 21 minutes.

The only thing missing from the win was Seton Hall head coach Kevin Willard, who had been suspended from the game against Misericordia and the season opener against Wagner, due to an NCAA investigation into potential transfer tampering. The Pirates were led by assistant coach Grant Billmeier to the win against Misericordia and he will be filling in for Coach Willard in the game against Wagner.

Looking forward, the Pirates open the regular season against Wagner on Tuesday, November 5, at 6:30 p.m. inside Walsh Gymnasium at Seton Hall University. You can catch that game on 89.5 FM WSOU, on the call will be Michael Daly and Joe Cammarota.
