Softball takes two losses in doubleheader to Eastern Illinois, FGCU

Date: March 16, 2019

By Ben Harris

After dropping their first game of the day to Eastern Illinois, 4-3, the Seton Hall Pirates ended their second game of the day by dropping to Florida Gulf Coast 8-0 in five shutout innings.

Florida Gulf Coast came out firing with seven of their eight runs coming in the first two innings. In the middle of inning two, FGCU shortstop Reedy Davenport hit a grand slam to left to make the score 6-0 in favor of the Eagles.

The final run of the game came in the bottom of the 4th, as FGCU’s Mikenzie Vaughn allowed Davenport to score on an RBI groundout to second. Eagles pitcher Riley Randolph proceded to retire the next three Pirates at the plate to enact the mercy rule ending.

The Pirate’s only hit came during the leadoff at-bat as Janae Barracato singled to left. Needless to say, it was a quiet afternoon for Seton Hall.

Seton Hall’s Chrisa Head received the loss after allowing 6 earned runs in 1.1 innings while FGCU’s Randolph grabbed a well-deserved win in her 1-hit outing.

The Hall will end its visit to Clearwater tomorrow with another doubleheader. The matchups are against Chattanooga at 2 p.m. and Purdue at 4:15 p.m.
