SHU Summer Baseball Update with Tim Best

Date: July 22, 2017

By: Tim Best

We have reached the point in the summer where the best separates themselves from the rest and earn all-star status in their respective summer collegiate leagues. Here is an update on how some Seton Hall standouts have made their pushes in the past week.

Like his team, the Upper Valley Nighthawks, Al Molina has cooled off as of late. However, he was a driving force behind a 4-0 victory on Thursday to snap a three-game skid as he had two hits and drove in two runs. With a .292 average with five home runs and 22 RBIs as of Friday, Molina is expected to be selected to the NECBL All-Star Game next Sunday. Staying in the NECBL, Mike Alescio had an RBI single and a triple for the Ocean State Waves in a 4-2 road win over Ryan Ramiz and the Mystic Schooners on Wednesday. The day before, Ramiz had a monster game in a 17-15 slugfest win for Mystic over the Danbury Westerners. The Freehold native hit a home run and drove in four runs on the night. With the game tied at 12 entering the ninth inning, Ramiz hit a two-run single to put his team ahead for good as he was the catalyst behind a five-run rally in the top half of the inning.

The ACBL held its all-star game on Monday. Representing Seton Hall in this game were Rob Dadona of the Staten Island Tide and Tyler Shedler-McAvoy of the North Jersey Eagles. Shedler-McAvoy proved to be one of the stars for the victors as he had two extra-base hits in the winning effort. The day before this game, Dadona had three hits in five at-bats in a 12-11 defeat. One of his three hits was a solo home run and he also scored two other times.

Down south, Christian Del Castillo hit his first homer of the summer, a solo shot, for the South Florida Huskies in a 9-8 loss. After a slow start, he is now hitting over .300 with nine RBIs.

Last but not least, Noah Thompson was recently named Pitcher of the Week in the Coastal Plains League for his tremendous outing on the mound for the Gastonia Grizzlies on Saturday. The rising sophomore struck out 16 hitters, the most by any pitcher in the CPL this summer, over eight innings pitched.

That's all for this week's update. The final regular season update of the summer will come next weekend, so make sure to stay tuned for it.
