The Pirates attempted to spark a rally late in the ninth inning but ultimately fell 2-1 to the Xavier Musketeers. Seton Hall’s season came to an end on Friday in Mason, Ohio, as they were eliminated from the Big East Tournament.

Both squads combined for three total runs and each of the three runs came from three separate solo home runs. Connor Grammes began the scoring in the bottom of the first with his solo home run to right-center field, which gave the Musketeers an early 1-0 lead over Seton Hall. Grammes hit his eighth homer and recorded his 27th RBI of the season.

Seton Hall’s starter Noah Thompson bounced back from giving up the homer to Grammes by throwing three consecutive scoreless innings. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Chris Givin extended Xavier’s lead to 2-0, after he walloped a home run over the left field wall at Prasco Park.

Thompson persevered and went on to pitch eight full innings and did not give up another run following Givin’s solo home run in the fifth. Thompson finished his start with two earned runs, three hits, three walks, and five strikeouts. Seton Hall’s lack of offensive production during his eight innings on the mound resulted in Thompson receiving the loss. The junior pitcher ended his season with a 4-3 overall record and a 4.20 Earned-Run-Average.

Seton Hall showed signs of a comeback with a leadoff home run by Casey Dana in the top of the ninth inning, which pulled the Pirates within one run, 2-1. After Dana’s home run, Xavier replaced Trey Schramm with Lane Flamm to record the final three outs of the ballgame. The Hall’s first two batters that faced Flamm were struck out and Alex Clyde grounded out to shortstop with two outs to end the game and Seton Hall’s season.

Grammes received the victory for Xavier, as his season record improved to 5-5. Flamm picked up his eighth save of the season for the three outs he secured in the ninth inning. Xavier and Seton Hall were tied in hits, with three each during the nine innings of action.

The Xavier Musketeers will await the loser of tonight’s contest between Creighton and St. John’s, as they will play tomorrow at 1 p.m. Seton Hall’s time in the Big East Tournament has been cut short and they will not be making back-to-back Big East Tournament Championship Game appearances.
