Seton Hall softball splits double header with Providence

Date: April 19, 2019

By Ben Harris

After a competitive afternoon of softball, the Pirates split the doubleheader with the Providence Friars.

In game one, both teams started out slow offensively, but Providence broke the cold streak in the 4th inning when right fielder Emma Lee knocked an RBI single to left field, allowing infielder Crista San Antonio to score.

The only other run of the game was scored by Providence in the bottom of the sixth as Allison Abbatiello hit an RBI single, scoring Annie Flego.

The Pirates almost came back, as they had the tying runs on base in the top of the seventh, however, only a strikeout and a groundout followed.

Even with the 2-0 loss, Reganne Camp pitched well, only allowing two earned runs with four strikeouts. However, she received a loss while Providence’s Daniela Alverez recorded a four hit win.

In game two of the day, the Pirates recovered from the morning’s lack of run support. Seton Hall jumped out to an early 2-0 lead as Janae Barracato and Hailey Arteaga opened with consecutive doubles. The early action was followed by a Darby Pandolfo RBI bunt, of which, she still reached base for the single.

Providence came out firing as well, scoring three runs in the bottom of the second. However unfortunately for the Friars, those thre runs marked the end of their run scoring for the day.

The Pirates proceeded to climb out from under the early 3-2 lead with the help of Janae Barracato once again. She hit a fantastic, high-pressure, 2-out, 2-run double in the top of the sixth inning to bring the Pirates back.

Madison Strunk had a great day on the mound for the Pirates, especially considering her impressive recovery from the shaky second inning. She bounced back and was unstoppable late in the game, including a pair of strikeouts in the bottom of the seventh to finish off the Friars 4-3. Strunk recorded six strikeouts and only two walks in her complete game win, while Providence’s Megan McCune received the loss.

The Pirates (18-21, 5-7 Big East) and Friars (25-17, 6-7 Big East) will face off again this upcoming Saturday. It will be another home game for Providence at Seton Hall will travel back to Glay Field in Providence, Rhode Island for the 12 pm Big East matchup.
