Seton Hall settles for a tie against CCSU

Date: September 15, 2019

The Seton Hall Pirates tied with the Central Connecticut State Blue Devils, 0-0, on Sunday afternoon at Seton Hall Prep in West Orange, NJ.

The Pirates came into the day looking to turn things around from their two game skid losing to Long Island University last week and Siena on Thursday. In this very young season, it has been a struggle for the Pirates on the defensive end.

In the four games played the Pirates have allowed five goals. The Blue Devils team that the Pirates hosted today in West Orange has a lot of offensive firepower. The Blue Devils have scored in all six of their games leading up to today’s matchup. Along with that, the Blue Devils have forced 10 goals so far in their 2019 campaign.

The Pirates did well of limiting shots for the Blue Devils in the first half. Zero shots for them in the first 28 minutes of the game. Along with that, only one shot on goal for the Blue Devils at the end of the first half. Sophomore midfielder Roma McLaughlin, who leads the Blue Devils in goals scored, was silenced in that first half. Zero shots for the sophomore and was quickly subbed out.

The Pirates on the other hand could not do much better on their offensive attempts. Although the Pirates had nine shots in the first half there were only two on goal. This has been a problem for the Pirates so far this season. The team has had a plethora of shots but have struggled to convert to put the ball in the back of the net.

The lackluster shooting continued for both teams in the second half. No team was able to capitalize. The number of shots certainly picked up for the Blue Devils taking a total of seven shots in the second half. The Pirates were unable to match this ferocity on offense in the second half and were only able to take two shots in the half.

The Pirates and the Blue Devils traded blows, but no team could take advantage of their offensive chances and score. At the end of the two halves the score remained 0-0 and things will head to overtime.

Junior forward Alyssa Reszkowski had a good look at goal in the 91st minute to start the overtime period but the shot was saved by Amanda McQuillian. McQullian was needed early and often in overtime. In just the first 10 minutes the Hall had fired off four shots. None were able to break the tie because of McQuillian’s play.

The barrage of shots continued for both teams in that final period as they desperately tried to take the lead. The play of Seton Hall’s Harpa Johannsdottir was truly tested as Erica Bardes shot came in the 110th minute, but Johannsdottir was able to keep the score level.

After 110 minutes, the scoreboard still read 0-0 and the Pirates and Blue Devils had to settle for a draw after 32 shots were taken by both teams. The Pirates stopped their two-game losing streak and will be back in action against Drexel in Philadelphia, Thursday, September 19.
