Seton Hall loses McKnight in bounce back win over Southern Miss on Thanksgiving

Date: November 29, 2019

Seton Hall went into the second game of Battle 4 Atlantis play after a tough loss to No. 11 Oregon Ducks the previous night. The Pirates were looking to bounce back after blowing a 19-point lead the previous night and pick up a win on Thanksgiving against the Southern Miss Golden Eagles.

Seton Hall got off to a hot start, Myles Powell knocked down a tough three pointer doing what he does best, followed by Romaro Gill getting a huge block that provided some energy for the Pirates. Gill would add on another block, but the Pirates got off to a slow start scoring wise with Myles Powell having his struggles from the field with only one make in the first half.

Southern Miss came into this game with most in college basketball expecting them to be blown out by Seton Hall, but after the Pirates got out to a 26-16 lead, the Golden Eagles went on a huge 8-0 run to cut the lead to 26-24 as they were able to put up a fight against this No. 13  Pirate team. Seton Hall was able to bounce back after the Southern Miss run with the Pirates going on a run of their own to end the half leading 40-31.

In the second half the Pirates started to look more like themselves starting to pull away in the game going on an early run capped off by Myles Powell who led the team in scoring with 18, defining the shake and bake with a move that would extend the Pirate lead to 64-46. Sandro Mamukelashvili stepped up making some key scoring plays in the second half adding on 14 in scoring along with 7 rebounds which led the team in that category.

Seton Hall got out to a lead similar to the way that they had gotten to that lead against Oregon the night before, it would come down to if the Pirates would be able to close against this Golden Eagle team, and that was exactly what The Hall would do as they would continue to extend their lead on Turkey Day and held on to the win 81-56. The Pirates were able to move past the disappointment against Oregon and bounced back on Thanksgiving night.

With a win tonight, the Pirates advance to the fifth-place game in the Battle 4 Atlantis loser’s bracket against Iowa state, who defeated Alabama to advance. This sets up a rematch against Iowa State on Sunday Dec. 8, on the road in Iowa State which could turn into two solid wins against the Cyclones.

You can catch all the action against Iowa State on WSOU 89.5 tomorrow night at 7 p.m. with Jose Feliciano and Dalton Allison on the call.
