The Seton Hall women’s basketball team lost to St. John’s, 77-76, this Saturday, Feb. 22, in what was a close game. They now have an overall record of 16-11 and a conference record of 9-7.

The first quarter of the game saw the Pirates completely dominating both offensively and defensively. They won the rebounding battle on both ends of the floor and prevented the Red Storm from scoring from scoring from outside the arc. The team led 24-10 after the first 10 minutes with Alexis Lewis outscoring St. John’s on her own with 11 points in the quarter.

The second quarter saw a slight decline in the defensive effort for the Pirates and an uptake in effort for the Red Storm. The team took a lot of good high percentage shots, and had eight offensive rebounds, but apart from Shadeen Samuels who had 11 points in the quarter, they struggled to find the bottom of the basket.

These struggles didn’t stop them from keeping a firm grasp on the lead though as they went into the half up, 41-35. The third quarter was when the tide really began to turn in favor of the Red Storm. St. John’s scored 25 points in the period with most of them coming from Leilani Correa who had 19.

Despite continuing to win the rebounding battle on both sides of the floor, almost no shots fell for Seton Hall. They managed to keep it together just enough to end the quarter with the lead, 62-60.

The final 10 minutes of the game when things got tense as St. John’s led by two or three points for most of the quarter. Desiree Elmore stepped up and scored eight points after going scoreless in the third, including what the Pirates thought was the game winning basket. Ultimately the game ended as a foul was called against the Pirates and Kadaja Bailey of St. John’s made both free throws to secure the victory for her team.

The Pirates had three players record double-doubles in the near victory. Lewis led the team with 22 points and 12 rebounds. Samuels finished with 19 points and 12 rebounds, while Elmore had 16 points and 11 rebounds. As a team, they had a total of 49 rebounds compared to St. John’s 23.

The women’s team will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 28, when they take on Xavier in Walsh Gymnasium.
