The Seton Hall Pirates were able to beat Providence by a score of 65-56 to get their first Big East conference win of the season. The Pirates are now 9-6 on the season and 1-3 in conference play.

The Hall came into this Big East matchup winless in conference play and came out fast in the first quarter. The Pirates were playing hard and were able to get a lead of 7 points at one point in the opening quarter. After taking their 14-7 lead they slowed down a bit and went scoreless over the last 3 minutes of the first quarter.

The second quarter was a big one for Donnaizha Fountain as she got to the line with 5:41 left and after making both shots she had scored 1,000 career points. She added a three point shot and 2 defensive rebounds in the quarter to help the Pirates expand their lead to as much as 15 points. The Pirates went into the half holding a 10-point lead with the score at 33-23.

After halftime, the Pirates needed to make sure they continued to play well and hold their lead. The team got a boost from two veteran players, Donnaizha Fountain and Jaquan Jackson. After the game Fountain said “I’m tired of losing” and that the team used that same feeling as motivation to go out and perform well. Fountain did her part scoring 6 points and grabbing 4 rebounds in the third quarter. Jackson gave the team the biggest boost as she scored 10 points in the quarter. With the strong play from Fountain and Jackson the Pirates went into the fourth quarter leading by 12 points.

The fourth quarter was the only quarter in which Seton Hall didn’t outscore Providence, however they were playing more defensively for the majority of the fourth as they were trying to protect their lead and secure their first Big East conference win. The Pirates did enough to hold out for the victory and finished the game with a score of 65-56.

Fountain and Jackson led Seton Hall in scoring as they scored 20 points and 15 points respectively. Fountain also added 12 rebounds to her stat line as she secured her first double-double of conference play. After the game Coach Tony Bozzella said that Jackson and Fountain “really stepped up for us” but he also praised the other players such as Shadeen Samuels and Deja Winters for their defensive efforts.

The Women’s basketball team plays their next game on Sunday, Jan. 7 as they travel to Indianapolis to take on Butler at 1 P.M. Tune in to 89.5 FM WSOU for live coverage of the game.
