Seton Hall gets shut out by Drexel 1-0

Date: September 19, 2019

In their sixth game of the season, the Seton Hall Pirates lost their Thursday night match to the Drexel Dragons, 0-1.

Coming into this game, the Pirates were 1-3-1, looking for their first win since their second match of the season against Lafeyette on Aug. 29. Their most recent match was a 0-0 double-overtime tie on Sunday against Central Connecticut State. Struggling so far early in this season, the Pirates were not able to begin the turnaround just yet.

Freshman goalkeeper Harpa Johannsdottir started in goal for the Pirates but ended up being swapped out after halftime for Blair Currie. Senior goalkeeper Libby Baeza played was in net for the Dragons all match long, and for good reason, as she ended up posting a shutout.

The first half did not go as planned for the Pirates. Offensively, they had three shots and four corner kick opportunities, but converted on none of them. The closest they got to a goal was during the ninth minute when junior forward Atley Fortney's shot banged off the crossbar. Then on the defensive end, the Pirates allowed Drexel to do work in their zone.

The Dragons had nine shots in the first half alone, which ended up being more than double the number of shots Seton Hall had all match. But out of those nine shots, three were on goal. Johannsdottir was able to save two of the shots, but the second of the three got past her. Drexel's freshman forward Annalena O'Reilly scored the lone goal of the match on an assist from Junior Forward Melissa Lyon at the 30:52 mark.

In the second half, the Pirates offense continued to be almost nonexistent. They were only able to attempt one shot the entire half, as junior midfielder Laura Hooper missed wide right. They attempted two corner kicks as well but lost possession both times, the second due to being offsides.

Defensively, the Pirates continued to allow the Dragons into their zone but kept the ball out of the net. Currie replaced Johannsdottir for the second half and made a save on Drexel's only shot on goal during her appearance. Drexel was able to take seven second-half shots but did not convert on any.

The Pirates will look to end their losing streak in their away match against the University of Delaware this Sunday, Sept. 22. Drexel's next match will take place away at Columbia this Sunday as well. Seton Hall's match with Delaware will be their last of their out-of-conference schedule. They will begin Big East play starting on Sunday, Sept. 29 in their match against the Butler Bulldogs. The Pirates look to improve their win column against their in-conference opponents.
