Seton Hall baseball dropped the second game of their weekend series to the USC Trojans on Saturday evening, 3-0.

Noah Thompson was on the mound to start the game off for the Pirates and in the first inning he forced USC’s lead-off hitter Rylan Thomas to ground out to third base. With two outs and two runners in scoring position for the Trojans, Thompson struck out Ben Wanger for the third and final out to avoid early damage. The Trojans finished their first appearance at the plate with one hit and two runners stranded.

Casey Dana began the top of the second with a lead-off walk for the Pirates, but that was all for nothing due to Seton Hall’s inability to get their offense going against John Beller in the second. Seton Hall left a man on base during their offensive half of the second inning.

The bottom half of the second inning proved to be a fruitful one for the USC Trojans, as they managed to break the scoreless tie with two runs on three hits. The scoring started when Tyler Pritchard knocked a double down the right field line, and he brought in his teammate Ben Ramirez from third base. Preston Hartsell flew out to center field and recorded an RBI with his sacrifice fly that advanced Tyler Lozano to score. USC led 2-0 at the end of the second inning.

In the top of the third, the Pirates left a man on base from a walk and were unable to record a hit in the inning. USC was unable to cross the plate in the bottom of third, but they managed to knock down two hits off of Thompson. The offense for Seton Hall improved in the fourth as they had two men on base but the Pirates left them stranded by the end of the inning.

In the eighth inning, USC scored their final run of the game when Jamal O’Guinn blasted a double to right center field that scored Tyresse Turner. The Trojans went on to hold Seton Hall scores and they maintained a shutout, 3-0 victory.

Thompson endured 7.0 innings pitched and gave up one earned run on six hits from the Trojans against him. The Pirates are back in action on Sunday at 3 p.m. to close out their series against USC.
