Seton Hall falls to DePaul in four sets, 3-1

The Seton Hall women’s volleyball team lost in four sets, 3-1, to DePaul in the final game of their road trip on Saturday evening. This brings them to an overall record of 5-11 and 0-2 in Big East play, and extends their losing streak to three games.

The Pirates won the first set after taking a 5-1 lead early forcing the Blue Demons to take a timeout. They would continue to dominate forcing DePaul to take another timeout with the score 15-6. The set would end 25-13.

The second set was all DePaul as they went up 6-3 early. While the Hall would eventually tie it up at 15, when Raygan Murray registered a service ace. Eventually, the Blue Demons would go on a 10-7 run to win the set, tying the game at one set a piece.

In the third set, Julia Wilkins’ kill gave the Pirates an early 6-5 lead in the set. The Pirates led 12-8 due to a kill by Haylee Gasser, but the Blue Demons would battle back to maintain control in the set. The set ended in favor of DePaul when Brittany Maxwell killed a set from Avarie-Evans Allen.

 As the Pirates looked to force a fifth set, they would keep the game close, taking a timeout to regroup as DePaul went on a 3-0 run halfway through the set to take a 14-11 lead. Maggie Cvelbar’s service error when the Pirates trailed by one point, increased their deficit to two points, 18-16.

Despite the fourth set being more competitive, Seton Hall would lose the set 25-22. Even though the Hall would eventually come close, having tied it 22-22 late, DePaul would ultimately win the set, 25-22. They also won match, 3-1, after going on one final run.

In the loss, the Pirates were led by junior Amanda Rachwal, 17 points on 14 kills, and senior Gasser, 12 points on 12 kills. Other standouts included freshman Murray and senior Cvelbar, who had 18 and 12 digs, respectively. The team looks to come back from this loss in their return home this Friday, October 4, as they take on Providence College in Walsh Gymnasium.
