Seton Hall falls short on the road to Creighton, 78-66

Seton Hall (9-5 conf. 16-9 overall) came into the D.J. Sokol Arena after a dominant 71-45 victory against Providence. The Pirates hoped to build off that momentum from the Providence win against the Creighton Bluejays (7-6 conf. 15-9 overall) on the road.

The 15-14 score at the end of the first quarter did not do justice to the way Seton Hall played to start the game. It was a slow start where the Pirates were not able to get their shots to fall. The team shot 29% from the field, but they were getting good looks. The rebounding battle was all Seton Hall, ending the quarter with a 12-6 advantage.

The same shooting inefficiency showed up in the second quarter which kept Creighton in this ball game. The Hall ended the half going 10-30 shooting 33%, while the Bluejays shot 50%, taking advantage of the Pirates' inefficiency. Seton Hall still dominated the glass outrebounding Creighton 20-13 and had an impressive 8-1 advantage on offensive rebounds.

Creighton began the third quarter getting out to an early run and began to put more pressure on Seton Hall. The Pirates’ inefficiency was still prevalent in the second half, and Creighton still stayed at around an impressive 50% from the field. Seton Hall was still able to retain their rebound advantage, but the score still stayed in Creighton’s favor 53-47.

In the final quarter, Seton Hall had segments in the game where they chipped away at Creighton’s lead but had difficulty being consistent and bringing the lead down to one possession. Creighton was also able to match the rebounding of Seton Hall and closed the gap to 34-31 by the end of the game.

Creighton was able to pull away quickly off the play of Jaylyn Agnew and Tatum Rembao who both finished with 20 or more points. Both Rembao and Agnew hit five three pointers that easily put the Pirates away in this one. Despite a 19-point performance from Mya Jackson, the Pirates still fell against Creighton, 78-66. The loss sent the Pirates to a 9-6 in conference and they suffered 10th loss of the season.

Seton Hall will need to bounce back against St. John’s on Saturday, Feb. 20, where Wilnir Louis and Heaven Hill will be on the call on 89.5 FM WSOU.
