Seton Hall Ends VCU Invitational with Loss to Bowling Green

Date: September 16, 2017

By: Chris Schweitzer

Seton Hall volleyball fell in their final game of the VCU Invitational to Bowling Green by a score of 3-2. The Pirates lost all three of their games in the VCU Invitational and have now lost five in a row after starting off the season 6-2.

The Pirates started off the match strongly with a dominant showing in the first set as they won 25-15. Abby Thelen lead the way for Seton Hall in the first set with five kills. She added another five kills in the second set which the Pirates also won. The second set wasn't as smooth for Seton Hall though as they won it by a score of 26-24.

With a 2-0 set lead, the Pirates looked to end this game quickly and put Bowling Green away in straight sets. The Falcons had other plans though as they jumped out to a quick 9-4 lead. The Pirates brought it back however with a strong run and tied the score at 12. Bowling Green took the lead again and went on a 10-2 run which saw them lead 22-14. They rode this strong run to an eventual 25-17 win in set three.

The fourth set didn't go much better for Seton Hall as Bowling Green once again jumped out to an early lead and at one point led the Pirates 19-11. Seton Hall showed some fight and came all the way back from that deficit to tie the set at 24. Bowling Green would eventually take the fourth set by a score of 27-25.

The fifth and final set was well played by both teams as neither of them were able to gain much of a lead on the other. The momentum from Bowling Green's previous two set victories proved to be too much for the Pirates though as they would take the fifth set by a score of 15-12 and win the match 3-2 over the Pirates.

The Pirates now hold a 6-7 record heading into Big East play and start off on the road in Milwaukee as they face off against Marquette on Friday September 22.
